.277 long range build
 

I’m looking to get some opinions on a .277 build I’ve wanted for some time. Now I know there’s a lack of bullets, and yes I know the 7 is better terminal performance but have always had a soft spot for the .277. Looking into either running a 270. Wsm on a long action or a 270 Sherman short on a short action pushing 165gr matrix or 170 Berger’s. Does anyone have any experience with either these set ups?

Years ago before the long range craze I built a 270 on the 300 win mag case. It was a good one !

The biggest problem with the.277 is the availability of good quality match bullets . Alberta Wildcat bullets used to make them and I think Chinchaga does now , and possibly Berger .
Personally speaking, you couldn't give me a rofke chambered in 270 if there was a choice of a .285 or .264 !:thinking-006:

I don't care if it's in a potato gun, I'd still have a hard time keeping one in the rack if I had the choice between a .264 and .284 - or a .311 or .308 for that matter !:sHa_sarcasticlol:

I shoot the 165 matrix out of my 270 wsm with really good results

I had a very good accuracy out of 270 wsm with 150 Bergers and RL19 at around 3000 f.s .
Not exactly the very long range set up , but I liked the performance of this bullet on 3-4 deers, couple of black bears and one young cow elk.

The longest shot was at around 600 yds.

With all the cartridges that have fallen from favor with the hunting/shooting world for whatever reason except sentimentality, you'd think that the 270 Win would have disappeared long ago. Few calibers offer a more limited range of bullet weights/types than .277. Few off-the-shelf rifles offer a more limited range of uses than those chambered in 270 Win. It's a niche if there ever was one. It doesn't out-perform anything closely related. Yet you can find several 270s on the shelf in any gun store in North America. "Suitable" seems popular, albeit boring.

What kind of velocity are you getting? Is that on a long action or short actjon

It’s on a short action....I’m getting around 2900fps with h1000 and the bullet is 10thou off the lands

Well I already have a 264 that puts the 140hybrids into .3 moa out to 650, and have a 7mm that is just over 1/2moa, and a 6mm that should be back from the smith any day now and expect nothing less from it!! Have always had a .277 soft spot and with the 265 hybrids out of a ss or wsm it’s ballistically superior to the 6.5 and although not to that of the 7mm it’s not far behind. Just like the idea of shooting an underdog

I have owned alot of 270s over the years and when I went to build one I thought I'd make a wsm but I opted for the wby case and I've been really happy I went that way

That doesn’t sound too bad! Every where I looked it seemed like I needed to go with a long action to really utilize the velocity of the wsm case but would really like to go with a short action build. We will see I guess. Could be safe and do a Sherman short build and hope for 3000fps on a short action

From 90 grains to 170 grains. A quick search will show a hundred options. That is a few ?

I am with Chuck on this topic. The whole cartridge discussion is overrated.

The OP was looking for advice, not posters who like to listen to themselves talk.

They give ‘er bullets, because the main reason for wildcatting is to hot rod something different than factory!:)
Whether it’s good bad or ugly means nothing except to the owner !
The best advice I can offer is to talk with the guy building the barrel and the bullet manufacturer so you get the twist right for what you want to build, but you probably already know that :)
