Ford F-150 5.0 opinions and feedback
 

Looking into the 5.0. now that it's been back into production for a mit full years, what are your thought on them. Any widespread issues? Also how about the truck it's self?

My F-150 is a 2017. Almost 100k and no issues whatsoever.

The 5.0 is a simple, tested to be true and reliable, reasonably powerful, tows nicely and fuel efficient engine without the worries and nightmares of the "other" Ford engine.

Not too many complaints about the 5.0.

Very solid engine with fewer moving parts than the Ecoboost. I replaced an old Ford with the original 5.0 (different animal) and I got 24 reliable years out of it so I did feel a bit of loyalty to another Ford and a naturally aspirated engine.

We've been running two at work since 2015. No issues with either of them.

My work uses the 5.0's in all the half ton trucks. Our Mechanics have said they have proven to be reliable and efficient. I would have gone with one in my new truck if it had everything I had wanted but the 3.5 eco came out ahead for my needs.

In all honesty you can't beat a 5.0 from Ford, its the equivalent of a Chevy 350. Tried and true!

My wife’s 5.0 F150 has been flawless. We decided to go with the 5.0 instead of the eco boost for peace of mind.

Lots of valve and head issues. Cylinder issues.

My son had a 12 that dropped cylinder 8, very common. He replaced it with a low mileage 2015, 5.0 again. Good so far.

Im On number 7 in roughly 9 years. Over 110, 000km on each. Had the 5.4L , a couple ecoboosts and a couple 5 litres. Liked them all.

Good fuel milage at decent highway speeds not really any difference than the 3.5 EB.
Can tow - i realize its not a diesel and doesnt have the boost that the 3.5 did when towing. Does it matter not really.

Only problem i had is electric fan went after 125000km in 2016 in that 5.0. A $600 fix. Still worked just roared alot.




F150s in general.
Rear end piled up in this current one after 70000 km. Warranty fixed it.

The 2013 had some kind of auto 4x4 issue fixed on warranty.

No other issues that were a problem of its design.

By the way these are oilfield trucks. Not grocery getting.

We had numerous cylinder/ head issues on the 2012ish models. I hear the new ones are better. From what we see running them at work I would never buy a base model Ford half ton. They just don't last like any of the heavier trucks or even the chevy 1500's

We have a couple hundred of them at work (large oil company in fort Mac)
In general they have been bullet proof for how we treat them and the maintenance they receive, oil change off set km not idle hours. They idle 8 months of the year
Front rad on 2012-14 seem to crack at top corners, roads don’t see graders often so thT could be the cause
17” rims are hard on brakes in mud/gravel. Get 18-20”
Rear limited slip axle is prone to pile up Get the elec locking one
Heater cores are going out of the 2015-18 trucks constantly, but only seem to be our work trucks, they idle 24/7 not sure if that’s causing the issue
Idle hours on our work trucks are the equivalent of 850000km by the time they get switched out and I know of 2 that dropped motors out of a few hundred
Personally I own a 3.5 eco in my 2018 but i pull a fair amount and don’t keep them off warranty,
But would buy a 5.0 in a heart beat if the deal was right

Bought a new 2012 FX4 Supercrew with the 5.0l, 3.73 locker and it has been a great truck. Only have 40000 km on it but it has been flawless. Only use it to pull the rv and the odd ice fishing trip but buy one you won't regret it. Best sales numbers in North America for a reason.

My buddy has the 5.0 with the 140L tank and I have the older 5.4L and 140L tank and he gets much better fuel mileage than me. I really like that engine and his truck is a 2012 or 2013 and has been good so far .

Over 87000km of BC bush driving/towing 32ft trailer on my 2016 5.0 and zero issues to date. I am going to trade up for a 2018 5.0 in a couple weeks. Been a really solid truck.

I have a 2014 F-150 standard cab, standard drive, with the 5 litre engine and a 353 gear and a electronic posi-track. I bought the truck brand new. I have installed duals and a breather kit, here is take, oh by the way, I am one of those guys that every drop of fuel is recorded and every kl is recorded. I also take it to KROWN every year. It has about 75k on it. It tows about a 3000 lb trailer about 5 or 6 times a year. I changed the oil every 5000 K and I use synthetic 5W-20 and a new filter every time I change, and I have had new vehicles every 10 years (sometimes 8 or 11) since 1964. It has never been in a garage. Here is my take.

I have never, and I mean never had it into a dealer in 4 1/2 years, that I have owned it. It has been flawless, starts every time although I do not get the weather you do, it still dips in the -20. HP, a way more than is needed. Mileage, when I travel if I stay at 75 MPH and there is no wind I average 25 1/5 MPG. If I average 55 MPH I get about 26 1/5 MPG. If in the city, stop and go, the mileage hurts. I have a person who owned a 3.5L and he traded it off on a 5L. It has been flawless. Wind is it's enemy and the fact it weighs about 5500 lbs. Before the breather kit it got 23 1/5 MPG. I do not know what else to tell you.

Blew up a motor at 101 000K on mine and ford said screw you.........
I will never touch a ford again. They wanted 10K to fix it and offered me nothing but the normal good sale price for a new truck if I wanted....
I have had 4 new dodge trucks. They all last me just fine and have not blown up. They never really have much for issues till 280-300K

Lots of great info! Thanks folks! Sounds like the 5.0 has done well by a lot of people. I'll throw one more question out there, do you think today's trucks are build better then the trucks of 25 years ago? Are they built to last if taken care or or would you say they are more disposable?

That depends on your wants. My first used vehicle had to have spark plugs every 20 or 30,000 miles, points and condenser were also replaced. Oil changes, every 2000 or 3000 miles. Starters every 50,000 miles and so on. To-days vehicles, when have I replaced anything? never have. But the metal covering the bodies is a LOT thinner.

I've got a 2012 5.0 4x4 crew with 3.73 locking rear diff and 165,000 km. It runs and tows 6500 lbs trailer flawlessly.

Highway mileage at 120 km/hr avg is about 19mpg but improves significantly going slower (21-22mpg at 100km/hr). This is my fourth F150 and overall I'm very happy with them.

That said, I have an engine ticking/knocking sound on this one you can hear from the front drivers wheel well. Others have mentioned cylinder/head problems on the older 5.0's (2010 - 2014) but I'm not sure if that's the case for me. My compression tests are perfect, oil analysis does not indicate anything, so I've come to accept it.

Replaced my 2016 f150 3.5 eco boost with a 2018 F350 6.7 powerstroke diesel. Gets pretty much the same milage as my neighbours f150 5.0. Just a heck of alot more truck.

I went with a 2018 F-150 EcoBoost and love it so far. 32,000 kms on it and no issues.
