Shot 2 deer and submitted late Nov. Phoned SRD last week they said its still in the queue. It's the figgen first week of March and still nothing.
If this province is serious about CWD surveillance and concerns for public health and safety do you not think that the government should pull their heads out of their azz and consider scaling up the CWD testing program to be aligned to the significant increase in WMU zones being tested because in my opinion 3 months is NOT anywhere close to being reasonable. Hunters are either going to stop submitting heads or start hunting elsewhere with these wait times. In either scenario not good for CWD control. What's up SRD? |

During the 2016 hunt, my doe tested positive for CWD.
Since then I moved across the border in Lloydminster to Saskatchewan. Does anybody know if I can still get my free replacement tag? Nobody from Alberta Gov't I have tried contacting will respond to the question. |

Big CWD numbers from the 2017 season.
Just noticed this post on another site. Thought I would share the information. This was posted on Let's Go Outdoors Alberta on facebook. I am amazed at how many deer tested positive.
And I quote: "Margo Pybus with Alberta CWD team tells delegates attending the Alberta Fish and Game Association conference the number of infected deer with CWD continues to grow. A total of 869 positive cases are now confirmed in Alberta. Most are being found in Mule Deer (754) while the number in Whitetail Deer is also on the rise with 398 cases." I question the statement because it says 754 mule deer and 398 whitetail were found to be infected. Add those two numbers and you get 1152. Not 869. Anyways, the numbers are very concerning. |
Where does CWD come from? Where does this originate? Why haven't we heard about this before if it's so deadly? Were deer populations infected with this in the last century? 1800's? How about early 1900's? People have been hunting whitetail deer and other ungulates since the early days of expansion westward. from what I've read, there's no mention of this disease in any literature I could find. I'm skeptical..

Believed to be a species to species transfer of scrappie to deer during feeding trials in Colorado in the '60's. Or its is a natural TSE like Creutzfelt Jacobs Disease in humans, scrappie in sheep and BSE in cattle. Been known about and identified as a TSE in the '70's. Be skeptical all you want but don't over look actual science. Tons of info at the link above. |
Wonder if everyone knows that in 2018 you will only be called/contacted by phone or letter if your deer tests positive for CWD. If your deer tests negative you will get a note at the RELM website attached to your account. You have to log into RELM to get your negative results.
Maybe this was the practice before now but I was just made aware of it. |
Interesting that there are reasons to suspect similarities to diseases contracted from eating squirrel brains... Link here.

I called and asked F&W today, if an animal can be tested for CWD without having the head.
The answer was NO. It surprised me a bit, as I was hoping they can also be tested by submitting a part of spinal cord which is part of central nerves system. |

Stumbled upon this video the other day. I will be trying this for the future. Hopefully they will take these items for a submission Sent from my SM-G930W8 using Tapatalk |
Anyone have any idea how long testing is taking this year. I dropped off my deer head Nov 13 at Cabelas in South Edmonton. Any idea how long its taking others to get back results?

Got my results back last week. Negative. The biologist advised that some of the heads were put in the bottom of the freezer that were submitted first.

Great post all, we really need to get all information out there. I was fortunate enough to have Camp Wainwright tags this year and was shocked at the numbers. I harvested this Mule deer in October in WMU 232 and it was positive for CWD. Moving forward I will be submitting heads and not consuming the meat till I get the results back. Here is what I saw
- very little fat content seen when skinning - the hide was pulling apart in my hand with very little effort My test results where back in 3 weeks, best guess was because I harvested the buck early in the season. I did have to take the head to the downtown office because the freezers were not yet put out. IMO I know it’s very inconvenient but till we know more about the effects on humans I’m playing on the safe side. |

Wow, was surprised to see a couple in the Calgary bow zone (wmu 212), especially so far west in the zone. Not good! DR Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
