.30-30 scope

My eyes aren't what they used to be, so looking for suggestions for scoping my lever action. Was thinking low powered variable with Weaver see through rings just as a backup?

I have a Leupold VX-2 on my 30-30. It’s 2-7x33 with a duplex reticle. I really like it. It has good eye relief and not too much magnification. Makes it a great walking gun. I also have a VX freedom 1.5-4x20 that is nice too.

The see through rings might be a bit tall, is it for a 94, 94AE, 336 etc?

There is those scout scope setups that some folks like as well.

I would say something in the 1.5-4x or 2-7x range would do nicely. I would also say nevermind to the see through rings. If you are concerned about the irons and eyesight not much point in having see through rings. They will just add cost and may be to tall forcing you to add some sort of cheek riser as well.

It's a Mossberg 464. Thinking either a 2-7x32 or 1-4x20. Opinions on the Leupold Freedom vs an older Redfield Revolution?

Fixed 4x

As long as it’s for a Marlin or a Win 94AE.

If it’s a true top eject ‘94, it gets pretty funky and pricy to scope it.

Would black powder scope work?

I would ditch the see through rings and run a vx3 1.5-5 or the 1-4 for a less expensive option.

I have a Leupold M8 on my 30-30 and it's great. Fixed 4x gets you to 150 yds no problem.

200 yards no problem with a scope

I run a B&L 1.5 - 6X on my 444 Marlin (thanks, Yvan). Works very well.

See Thru rings...you from Newfoundland?!!! Those come from a time when scopes were of lower quality and were not trusted so having irons available was a good ideal. Unnecessary, ugly, and your cheek may be far off the stock with those tall rings.

Never understood see thru rings ....... you still have to try and see your target through the rings which are far smaller compared to a scope eyepiece which is larger.

With a 1x or even a 1.5 on the lower setting, you should be able to shoulder the gun and acquire the target much faster compared to trying to peep under and through a scope then try and use the irons.

It is also awkward to have to raise up off the stock as the peep thru rings, when using the scope because they sit so much higher.

That was my experience using a similar set up anyways. Ended up going back to a lower ring and lower variable scope and haven't looked back.

As for scope, a 1-4 x 32mm is perfect. I like Leopold products, so that would be my choice.

Only thing

About 1-4X scopes is on lower magnifications you can see your front sight and 1/2 the barrel!

I run a Leupold VXIII1.5x5 on my Marlin 1895 45-70. It has been on htere for 30 years. Works great and makes shooting to 250-300 yards a very doable proposition. Sight it 3.5" high at 100 yards. This gives me 5.9" low at 200 yards, 18" low at 250 and 36" low at 300,with a 350 grain RN at 1900 fps. You can use the top of the thick wire on a duplex reticle on 5 power to get to 250 yards. 30-30 should have a similar trajectory.

I run a Vari-X -III 1.5X5X20 on mine for 27 years, got my largest buck with it!

Ran a weaver k4 on a 336 for several years before swapping it over to a .22lr. Easy on the wallet and for the money I feel it was a great scope. Could look for a leupold if you don’t want to go weaver. For the limitations of a 30/30 I’d definitely do fixed power.
