Odd weight loss

In the last 6 months or so I have lost about 60 lbs.
I wasn't trying to lose weight .

I've stopped eating sugar and white bread. but otherwise been eating the same.

I've noticed my hands and feet have a tingly feeling (like they are asleep)
and I have zero energy.

My doctor is useless... he says I should eat more.

I have almost no appetite at all and when I do eat, I feel full pretty quick.

The reason I stopped eating sugar and wheat is due to Psoriasis.

I know I should ask elsewhere for answers but thought I would ask here first.

I think you'd better find another doctor and quick, with all due respect. That is not good and could be many very bad things.
Like cancer bad.

Go ASAP and get another opinion or two!

Good luck and God bless.

How's your blood sugar? I went through a similar experience a few years ago, weight loss, always tired and always hungry. Turned out to be type 2 diabetes.

I dunno. I do have a sneaking suspicion it might be diabetes.
But I am NEVER hungry.

brownbomber 09-18-2013 12:54 AM

Far from a MD but sounds like diabetes to me

brslk 09-18-2013 12:59 AM

So, my Dr is somewhat useless. is there a way I can test my blood sugar? Like buy one of those units from the pharmacy? What are normal readings?

Rod1960 09-18-2013 01:05 AM

Normal fasting reading should be 5, as in first thing in the morning. Most pharmacies will give you a free meter when you buy the test strips. Expect to spend 50-70 dollars.

There is a blood test that a doctor can order, it's called an A1C test. It will give you a 3 month average of where your blood glucose (sugar) levels have been.

brslk 09-18-2013 01:20 AM

Thanks Rod. I'll do that tomorrow.

Is type 2 the one where you have to do injections or just eat accordingly?

Yeah, it could be diabetes but you're getting advice on a MESSAGE BOARD, dude. It could be something totally different.

Find another Dr... for what it's worth, my wife is one- and she says get your ass into a emergency room if you have to, or go see another doctor, but don't mess around with advice from here or try to self diagnose.

Go get real help.

Appreciate the advice Will and will be at an emergency room tomorrow.
Just trying to get some idea of what I am dealing with here.

I hate to go to the Dr but this is a serious issue and I will get it checked out by a pro.

Again, thanks.

PM sent, and I know you said you'd go to an MD, but I'm still echoing everyone else's advice to do so pronto!

I guess I should add also that she (the Wife) said it could be something not serious as well - (And diabetes where you are losing weight and tingling + other things is very bad in itself) but the chances that it is make it serious and necessary to go. She also said don't be afraid to say or ask outright what you want checked.. be stern. Good luck! Let us know.

brslk 09-18-2013 01:45 AM

Thanks Will and wife and others. I will go to the emergency room tomorrow even though I hate that crap.
I owe it to my wife to take care of myself.

I just wanted some ideas of what it might be.
I strongly think I have diabetes though.

All signs point to that.

I'll update this if I learn anything.

I foresee a lot of blood tests in my future... ugg....

takkotime 09-18-2013 01:59 AM

It's a hard call. I also hate that stuff-

My dad was the prototypical 'Man's Man' and if he had been less 'tough' and gone to a doc earlier, he would be alive today.

Instead he went when he had to, which was too late.

Don't be like my dad. Miss him EVERY day, and it'll be 10 years on Feb 14 2014.

Don't mean to be morbid, but want you to know where my heart lies.

Just so you know Will. Your words have made a difference.
I was dithering on going to the emergency dept tomorrow but I will for sure.
Thanks for the advice you and your wife have given me.

Bruce.

My brother in law was losing weight and didn't have an appetite. He's a big guy around 300 pounds. Lost around 60 then got sick like the flu. Wasn't getting better.. his mom checked his blood sugar and it was 25 and I guess normal is around 5. Got admitted to hospital immediately. Took a few days until blood sugar came down. Has to inject insulin now when he eats.

NSRfishing 09-18-2013 05:49 AM

you gave up sugar and bread you probably eating low carb you need fat for energy i dropped from 230 to 175 since march doing the same thing i eat 150 grams of fat a day and no more than 20 grams carbs never felt better

look up the ketogenic diet

Please don't go to the ER though. If you feel its not enough of an emergency to wait a day, you don't need to go to the ER. They're strained enough. Seeing another family doctor is best, they can refer you if needed. speak to them, share your thoughts and maybe you'll get a few different tests.

X2, unexplained sudden weight loss is a possible cancer symptom and this is not the place to get an answer.

Get another doctor
60 pounds lost through essentially no effort in 6 mos is a lot

BeeGuy 09-18-2013 09:37 AM

Unless you've been really active, you are starving.

A legit pound of weight loss every 3 days for 6 months is starvation.

I don't know your age, sex, weight or anything, but you need to seek medical help even if it is only diet related.

Sudden weight loss like that is not healthy.

silverdoctor 09-18-2013 09:46 AM

Definitely get a second opinion at the very least.

My cousin went through something similar, he was never big but he lost all the weight he carried and couldn't gain it back. He was downing the last of a beer one night and his brother (an MD) noticed a lump in his throat, turned out to be a goiter - hyperthyroidism.

Rustynail21 09-18-2013 09:55 AM

Ketosis

You may have forced your body into ketosis (google the paleo diet or caveman diet). I still would strongly recommend getting checked out. It means your body which used to burn sugar is now burning fat. The key is to eat enough fat to stabilize your system. If you dont your body withers away. Your body needs energy and if not from sugar then from fat. If not from either eventually you starve.

Id still have a dr check you out asap, but if they find nothing wrong except you are in ketosis do some good research before jumping any direction.

Good luck and look forward to the update!

fishpro 09-18-2013 10:06 AM

A couple things come to mind.

First is that you have just cut out a lot of unhealthy food that has a high glycemic index, so now your blood sugar levels are staying stable and you're not feeling the need to eat as much.

Alternatively, it could be some health condition. Someone I know recently went through over a year of unexplained weight loss, couldn't get a diagnosis from any doctor, and finally found out it was a form of e coli.

Keep on it until you figure out what it is!

mass 09-18-2013 12:22 PM

Could be graves disease (thyroid). I have had 2 friends come down with it.
