Smelts in Calgary?
 

I have discovered that Superstore no longer seems to be selling the large bags of 3-5" smelts (smaller sized with heads on). I like to use them on my pike jigs. A single $10 bag used to last me most of the season. Any suggestions where I can get them in Calgary? Cheers!

I usually buy smelts at The Fishin Hole because I live fairly close by. I'm sure what they sell is no value compared to Super Store, but they usually have them if you can't find a better deal elsewhere.

I would check out “No Frills”, they usually have them in the frozen section, I have also found them at Coop. Good luck.

the fishin hole has lots right now and are typically (not always) better than what you get from the super markets. The also have large herring in right now, I just picked up 6 packs yesterday to get me started. Still looking for XL sized herring though.

Cabela's also has smelt or they did when i was there a couple weeks ago. I do miss the big bag at superstore. much better price than fishin hole/cabela's.

I was at Ctire on 130th this aft and had a peek in the bait freezer and it was pretty full. Lots of those green shiners, herring and lots of smelts. I didnt need anything and left it all for you guys.

Those headless gutted smelts that safeway and superstore have are absolutely amazing, you can hook them to a jig head like you would any other jig body and they'll stay on even after an aggressive hit. Sobeys just brought in mini mackerel that are medium smelt sized and very flashy and good. As for larger herring, those bags of really big sardines at walmart are of great size and cheap $3.78 a bag of 8.. sometimes I cut them into nice sized plug, pending a look I want

Interesting. Are mackerel and sardines considered "bait" and not "bait fish" like smelt?

Smelts and herring are of the saltwater families Osmeridae and Clupeidae. I assume that mackerel and sardines would fall into the same category as smelt because they are saltwater fish.
