2018-2019 Coyote Harvest... Preliminaries!
 

The first gauge of the coyote harvest size is NAFA depot quantities at last receiving dates. Looks like we are bang on consistent to last years numbers, perhaps slightly up if we factor in who came/shipped and who didn’t.

Rumours of one other significant Alberta depot coyote numbers are stable as well.

The word is the carcass dealers numbers are way slow however. This is where, if there is a shortage, the shortage is being seen.

Can’t jump to conclusions yet but it looks stable for the first sale, however market buyers that rely on country carcass dealers may yet hit the panic button!

A look at the new tracibility security tags. Only a couple of depots are using these tags this year on a trial basis this season. Tags currently used for coyote only and are to be affixed and remain thru the dressing process, thru to the final destination.

Each ticket bears a distinct bar code just like the old skin tickets. I don’t think this years version of seal has an RFID chip, but future tickets will.

Is this the Canada Goose traceability initiative? Do you know where Trappers can find out more info about the status of the program?

Marty Rod Graham here I got a few bags of those tags from you or Marilyn a few years ago an I thought that they looked great. About a third of them will break off in the drumming after they go through the tanning process. Just a heads up there are tags with a zip tie attachment that stay the whole process.

Lets hope they dont break:budo: .. that would be a disaster to have your dogs unidentifiable .. I wondered about this when they were attached , I like the old method better .

That's really interesting. It was kinda sounding like numbers were down in many places. I can't say that mine are down too bad but I know I seem to have to work a lot harder to keep them up. Maybe coyotes are starting to catch on to our methods?

Rod, the NAFA tags are different that the security seals you got from me. The NAFA people have run rigorous tests with their tags and claim they survive the dressing.

The remaining tags l have left I am retiring due to the similarity of the Canadian NAFA seal. We are carrying the rat tail seals now and I can say these ones survive the tanning process at International Fur Dressers. They are tough.

USA NAFA seals are white.

These seals have been in use for a number of years now. They have used them on the top lots for at least 2 years and were adding seals to all skins last year in Toronto. I would assume that if they weren't standing up that NAFA would be well aware.

Sounds good Marty just thought I would chime in on what I have seen. Not sure what the others are made of but I used them on my Euro mounts an the little beasties will devour them.

I guess we dont really know how many of those that shipped this time are stuff that guys held over from not shipping to last seasons last sale. You hear lots of people saying they gonna hold them over til next sale but how many do? I guess in the end total number on sale is all thats relevant. Just thinking on the terms of catch rate and success from this current season.

Most times upgrading technology is better. Was NAFA having issues with the stapled bar code tags? Or just thought it was time for an upgrade?

Talked to Betty at Halfords and after close on last receiving day they are just shy of 3000 coyotes. They normally are over 5000. As for marten they usually ship between 800 and 1000. This year all their marten fit in a plastic tot.

I talked to the fur handlers at the ATA depot Saturday when I took my fur in. They were saying that a lot of Trappers were reporting that it was a slow year for coyotes. Tracey was saying that the count was about the same as last year though. Someone is doing well catching them but not anyone that I know around here.

My Fur Depot is way down in coyote numbers........

Dave, did Tracey at ATA mention how marten, fisher, fox etc numbers were beside the coyotes this year.

I never asked about anything other than coyotes. If you gave her a call she could likely tell you.

The catch is definitely down in my area, even sign and movement is sparse. Out of what I-am catching, I've had damn near a dozen with bad mite damage & a few with mange too. So hopefully things smarten up through January. Be a skinny harvest for me this winter if it don't...

Called NAFA today and they said their coyote count is down by 30%.

Personally my take on the current market is that the whole continent is short in supply. This should translate into maximum prices as we have seen in past seasons, but don’t expect to see $200 coyotes, rather see $150 heavies and $130 semi heavies. CDN $$$ of course!!!!

A friend from Nevada is seeing a $90 USD average already. We witnessed a spike in the price of both the Semis and Easterns already last May... never say never! No reason why a $50 strip on a $1300 parka couldn’t be a $60 strip x5 = $50 increased pelt price: Coukd certainly happen, but alas not expected. Expect to see a rise in ugly strips this year.

This shortage is just goofy tho... I’m just pounding them!!!

You ever get over 40 in a day? 50??? Surely 30 is old hat to a smart person like yourself??? And 20 a day is just... meh.

I talked to a real Super Dave the other day... skins like a mad man, claimed 20 start to finish in 4 hours. There’s even a guy or two alive that can skin and board 5 beaver an hour. Ain’t that crazy? And without technology, just the old fashioned way! I bet he catches coyotes when the moon is full too!

I'm in a high pressure area. Lots of guys after them. My numbers are good. You don't see a coyote cross an open field out here. They are holding tight like a big old whitetail. They are just under pressure. Change your tactics they are around. The easy dumb ones aren't.

I think Marty is passing through my neck of the woods with few snares if any set.My take as well as sign and numbers are way down.The coyotes I am getting are large adults as well.Very few pups all season.

All you need to do is look in the back of his truck on the way home.He definitely doesn't stack them there for show.Marty is the coyotes #1 enemy down in Southern Alberta.

Well pretty well all of sask and alberta are reporting lower numbers than normal except Marty, so theres our answers. Marty is catching them all. Some pics would be nice Marty it's the least you could do.

Wow! 70 days snaring x 50 ciyutes a day=3500 ciyutes! No wonder no one else can catch any!

No you sillies, record days are rare. I set my personal best probably 10-12 years ago, much higher than the wild claim made on YouTube about a world record coyote catch. I did come within 4 of my best this year one day and within 11 another.

Look at Facebook, there’s photos out there. Another guy was sounding like a 50 day in sask but it ended up being a 50/2 day catch. My now 3rd best catch was last year New Year’s Eve day or so . Only 3 mind blowing days in my life. Sorry to disappoint!

BTW, where’s the omnipotent one with all this ruckus going on???
