go-to Alberta flies
so for the most part all my fly fishing has been on vancouver island when i lived there and any time i go back home to visit. i have been wanting to hit up alberta rivers but never had anyone to go with which made the long drive to fishable waters not worth it until now. a freind of mine in red deer has been making some small trips out to various spots (not sure where i was just told "trunk road") and has invited me to tag along which brings me to the main question.
in bc i had a flybox that suited the area and fish that i was targeting mostly cutthroat trout and rainbows (and salmon of course) but now that i will be fishing Alberta i have to admit im kind of lost. i dont need a specific fly for specific water just a general idea on what bugs i should be trying to imitate. and of course just a bit of eye candy to keep people interested. im visiting the island this week and here is one of 12 fish i caught on monday. http://i1371.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0dh0yzjb.jpg |
Bh Prince nymph is a great general one that I find works well for me.
When I was tying I did lots of those and olive hare's ear type ones, as well as leech streamers in black, olive and purple. All bead heads as well. And bring some big minnow imatation for the Bulls, good luck! |
I'd go dry flies.
Orange Stimulators. Including some in larger hook sizes. If "trunk road" means where I think you're going to see some bulls. |
Dries: elk hair caddis, parachute adams, stimulator, depending on the type of year you may want some of the specific may fly patterns that could be hatching, pmd etc.
Nymphs: pheasant tail, hares ear, sanjuan worms, princes, either with or without a bead. check out this hatch chart it will probably help you, (red deer river drainage more than likely) http://bowrivercanada.com/hatch-charts/ cheers |
