Ice Fishing Near Edmonton

Hi all and thanks in advance for any info or advice. Despite the panic and quarantine going on throughout the province I am travelling to Edmonton this week with all the ice gear for my first fishing trip in the area. I am looking for some good "self-isolation" lakes to drop a line nearer the area of Sherwood Park. Only really have time for one day trip but travel isn't an issue with the price of gas these days. I got all the gear for all species and all the tools minus a power auger but I do with what I have. I have never caught a laker before and would love a good spot to change this. However, a good walleye, or pike lake with good action would be a more likely choice. I am not picky on size, really just want some action without having to run and gun all day with the hand auger. Thank you for any advice.

Using a hand auger in march is going to be tough. Tough is an understatement. Most places have 2ft of ice.

You sights are set a little high with not many lakes around Sherwood Park.

Id consider Wabamun, Cross, Long Lake, Pigeon, ( all less than 2 hours driving)

Lake Trout you have to go a few hours east west or north lol

twitchjig, thanks for the reply. After I posted I began looking at google maps around Sherwood Park and I see what you are saying. Lots of lakes with either water level issues or no fish in them. I've pretty much set my sights on Wabamun since it seems to be a go to place and has been of dream of my to fish since seeing it on the new fly fisher years ago. Luckily my Navionics app has the depth sounding for the lake so should be able to find some structure and get into some fish.

I was at Slave Lake on Saturday and it was pretty close to 4 feet of ice. If you are using a hand auger you probably my won’t be moving around much, so make that first hole count!

I was at Pigeon on Saturday - ice was well over 30" there too, almost the complete auger without any extension.
