Jumbo perch in 1' of water
 

Had a guy I worked with text me and said they are catching jumbos in about 1' of water,many over 1lb and 3 over 2lbs.Anyone try this shallow before?I have caught them in 6' or so but never that shallow.What are they feeding on thats in that shallow?

They could be feeding on water bugs or chasing minnows into a tight area in shallow water to ambush them. I think all fish are opportunistic feeders.

I don't think I've ever "purposely" drilled through 20" of ice and tried to drop a line in 12" of water .... but hey ..... fill your boots if that works. I'm usually hunting for jumbos in deeper water on deep structure.

Awesome job to the guy who texted you .... it's not every day you get to land one, never-mind 3, perch, all over 2lbs , that could be approaching the weight of the provincial record.

I've caught pike and perch in 1 fow. I usually start early season very shallow and work my way out.

Some pictures would help. I'm not saying your buddy is telling a fish tale, but I don't think people realize just how big a 2lb perch is.

Pictures please. Tape measure aswell. Spent more hours than I care to admit hunting for the real 2 pounder in alberta for 30 years dang near. Lots of pound and a half and a handfull of hawgs a couple ounces under 2 pounds. With the lakes closing for the spring it's that much harder. I am strictly central and northern. Always wondered about southern alberta with a little longer growing season and maybe more food...but those guys are tight lipped down there and rightly so.

I share the sentiment. I, too, have hunted jumbos and have yet to get one weighing 2 lbs. As a matter of fact, I have never seen anyone catch one weighing 2 lbs in almost 30 years of fishing myself.

And you all know how much time I spend on the water ...

It sounds like the guy who texted the OP is either pulling his leg OR is one "lighting strike survivor on the same day as winning the lotto" lucky type guy.

Even is he was a jeweled ruby, grand pubah, triple gold star, happy face stamp, grand master fisherman ..... that would be impressive.

I have no pictures BUT years ago at a lake by Lac la Biche we were catching big perch through the ice in a foot of water so I can believe perch might be that shallow.

He didn't say it was in Alberta so it is quite possible.

Don't put too much faith in those records.

While I've never caught one myself, I've seen a couple that were over 2 lbs on a hand scale that went straight into the deep fryer. Doubt the old guy who caught them knew or cared about records.

Bang on, most 2 pound perch are actually around a pound. It takes a true 14.5 inch plus full of eggs March perch to hit 2 pounds. Ive caught some true hogs up to 15 inches and half are just over 2 pounds and half just under.

Yup. Takes a 16" perch to break that 2 lb mark.

I can honestly say that I've caught a few big whites in 1'of water while ice fishing

Tia's World record was 15.5" 2.6lbs perch are like walleye once they get big their girth enlarges more then length.

Hello all, well I used to catch most of my perch in Coal lake in 1-2 feet of water in the north end on the west side of the lake using a small red and yellow five of diamonds tipped with maggots. We always caught big ones in shallow. Some of them were pushing 2 pounds. I live down south now and haven't fished it for a number of years now.

Biggest perch the wife caught was just a hair over a pound. I forget the length of it, but i do have a pic that i can show. It was in Sask. last year.

Yup catch them in Logan every year but it takes a bit to find them, the jumbos target the fresh water shrimp in the shallows.

I just caught my biggest on Wednesday, 1 pound 1 ounce, 12 1/4 inches long, my wife had a legitimate 14 inch pound and 3/4 to the hole, I missed the grab on him and he spit the hook😔

When my son was about 10 years old he pulled up a perch that would have been the Montana state record, but we didn't know it so we ate it. We knew it was big so we weighed it and if I remember right it weighed 2.4 pounds. It was about 20 years ago, so I might be off on the weight. We were fishing for Northern Pike and he caught it on a dead smelt on a treble hook. I was telling a friend about the perch the next summer and he said he thought it was bigger than the state record, so we checked and it was. I suspect a lot of record size fish have ended up in a frying pan.....

Don't push hard and carry a spare set of blades lol. I usually toast a set every year.

This is an honest 2+lb perch

This guy doesn't bs and he weighs his fish with a good scale.This guy has $2000 or more in fishing equip.not including his shack.He targets perch 80% of the time and isn't scared to travel 4-5hrs for a chance at a trophy fish.I asked for pics but he doesn't want to send any because last yr he sent a pic to someone and it ended up all over.Often his kid poses with the fish for pics.

He has been getting these big perch since xmas,most days he only catches 8-10 perch but he said they are all large.Yes there are a lot of shrimp he said.He is catching on a 5 of diamonds and maggots if that helps.

IN Cold Lake in the back bays on the sand there are good perch caught in shallow water, trouble is, that is a lot of water and a lot of holes drilled to stand a chance.

don't be jealous of his hard work,I have seen some of his perch and walleye mounts.He is a true sportsman ,maybe you could learn something?I was merely sharing info,I found it odd to fish so shallow myself and have never tried it.

Question still remains how do you find 1ft. of water through the ice? Any water level that low is most times at the shoreline and it is froze solid to the bottom.

1 ft. I would have to call hmmmm for sure.

Start deeper and work shallower, carry spare blades. Sand embedded in the ice is hard on blades. I believe it myself.
