canoe ~ kayak boat for trapping

Anyone have a recommendation for the ideal boat for slough water trapping.
I don't care for a canoe because they appear tippy, I think.
Would like something small, lightweight, stable and cheap.

The right canoe isn’t too tippy. Wide Flat bottom with a continuous keel and you’ll be very stable. A kayak isn’t going to fit the bill in any way except it’s light,
You won’t be able to get much gear into a kayak. You can make a “pirogue” out of plywood if that appeals to you, there are also tons of plans online for car topper boats....that might be the ticket.

Yes, Kayak is out of the question.
Canoe flat bottom...maybe
Jon Boats are out there various brands, all seem very stable.
Fibreglass versus aluminum...what's the better choice ?

Aluminum no question.
I trapped and guided with 14' Jons and canoes for years, fantastic boat style.
I also have a small Sportspal , but a job is the absolute best .
You can even car top them .
For a dedicated trapping scow, a 10 or 12' Jon is pretty tugs to beat :)

I have a 10' aluminum Jon Boat and it' the cat's meow. It fits nicely in the back of a pickup and is nice and light to load/unload. Not tippy at all and there's plenty of room for my float sets, traps, oars, etc. Just toss the rats and beaver in the bottom of the boat. If I really want to get fancy I can put a deep cycle battery in it with an electric trolling motor. Pop a hole in it and patch it quickly with some JB Weld. You could probably pick one up off kijiji for about $400. Money well spent and much better than a canoe or kayak. I'll be taking mine out tomorrow to set my float sets. I'll try to remember to take a picture.
