Pike tip up bait

I’ve used anchovies, great on some lakes but don’t work on others......what do you use. Beef heart?

Smoky buck 11-21-2020 05:21 PM

Herring or smelt mostly

mapleleafman3 11-21-2020 05:27 PM

x2 on the smelt or herring

Cold lake guy 11-21-2020 05:33 PM

Thx! Thought I might try pike belly

Ribolovac 11-21-2020 06:52 PM

Biggest herring you can get. Biggest ones at TFH. I have caught tiny pike about 2lb and a lot of large ones on the ice including a pb on ice at pigeon, 37 inch about 20 lbs. most people that have seen the bait comment that I should keep the bait and eat it it’s so big. herring all the way.

Only the skin, fins, eyes, and dead eggs of game fish can be used as bait. I find that whole fish work far better than belly meat. If you're stuck on using belly meat, try using belly sucker meat.

Herring or sardines both work for me, the oilier the better. I have caught them on beef fat and gristle while targeting Ling as well.

T&T supermarket has big herring for a good price sometimes.

The belly skin with the anal fin or fin from filet scraps is amazing imo. If the bite is slow, do a silence of the lambs and wrap the skin around a herring or larger smelt.

Interesting. I'll have to give it a try!

I find that pike like spanish mackerel too. 8" to 12" long. I would buy a box full from the fish market. Not expensive. T&T probably has them.

Do you think bait presentation is more important then the bait? Like Green or Pink, head up or head down, upside down, wire leaders, mono leaders just off bottom, mid water column etc you get the idea.

How about deer heart?

Burbot Sherbet 11-26-2020 10:59 AM

I’ve used moose tongue for burbs in the past, stays on the hook really well and they like it more the more tattered it gets. Heard moose fat works well too- gonna give it a try this week as I find myself with a ready supply!
