Weed ?
 

Now that I have your attention, can anyone identify this plant, weed or? Everything else around it was planted about 4 years ago, this only showed up this year. I believe that it is a weed, it has grown to about 9' since May, it has no flowers or fruit (yet?) and has a very heavy stalk.

It might be a weed but it’s not the smoking kind.

Maybe hemp?

Botany is not my strong suit but the familial resemblance is certainly there.

Try making some rope out of it and get back to us :)

It is neither hemp nor weed. Hemp’s leafs grow from a single point while on your plant they do not. Here is a leaf from a weed plant:

I do not know what kind of plant you have.

OP that looks more like an elder berry to me, if you cut a branch and it’s sorta spongy and soft then it is.

Definitely a weed. At my old place we had a shrub in the front flower bed and those things would grow several feet tall out of it. I was lazy on weeding, that's how I know :thinking-006:

My rule of thumb, that I happened to learn the hard way, if you didn’t plant it and don’t know what it is, pull it out once you find it. Clean up later could be a lot more effort, way more than the experiment is worth. Some plants are almost impossible (or plain impossible once they seed, which is what happened to me, or root deep enough) to get rid off.

X3 on elderberry. Cut it down as it will quickly take over that area. Grows very fast. Strange as we have a couple elderberry's that have popped up on our acreage as well. 2nd or 3rd year they flowered and produced berries. Anyone know if you can do anything with the fruit?

Grow older? (elder = older, see?) Sorry, too easy, couldn't resist.

Ironic though, I used to be an American Society of Agronomy Certified Crop Adviser, you'd think I'd know. But that was some time ago.

When i was in Nebraska last year my daughters father in law had those growing all over in his pastures. I forget what they call them.
