Great Weekend of shooting lots of fun

Ya I know its just an excuse to post a photo of some groups. I had a great weekend of shooting. Did some 5 shot groups, some were pretty good others could have been better but I am happy with how I did over all. I always seem to get a really tight group then an outlier. I havent been streching things out to long range much this summer (no hits at 1000) but I hope to get my first hit at 1000m this fall.
I was shooting my 6.5 x 47 Lapua Tikka rifle using 123gr scenars and 36.5 grs of Varget. |
Wow thats some dam consistent shooting thanks for posting,
What barrel are you using ? Where did you buy the Scenars ? What scope are you using on your rifle ? |

Yup
I got the 123 scenars from Prophet River. You can also order directly from Hirsch Precision as they are the Lapua wholesaler for Canada. Price is about the same from both.
I am using a 30" MTU contour Krieger barrel with a 1/8 twist. Velocity is about 2950 ( according to my Labrader) Using a Vortex Razor gen II 4.5 x 28 X 56 with the mil r retiticle Links for buying bullets http://store.prophetriver.com/search...&Submit=Search http://www.hirschprecision.com/ |
Good on you brother Mark.
I'm doing the 30 cal thing up my way since the last time we chatted. Hoping to get out to test the 6' steel gong. My brother picked up a swing set stand at dump to hang it from. Hopefully this week I can get it set up. One problem is that all 3 of my long range rigs are 30 caliber. Guess I'll have to head down range to paint over the dents. Ha You'll have a blast sorting out your new pipe. Don |
Mark you have been ready for a 1000 yards for a long time. I predict under 3 shots and you will be banging steel at 1K.
|
I wish
I wish, I have tried several times, probably over 50 rounds and cant hit the gong. I am stuck at 600m and cant get past it. I had a bit of a wall going from 500 to 600 as well for a bit. I know I will get past it but it is definately not an easy or simple thing. I have huge respect for those capable of the feat.

The step from 600 to 1000 shouldn't be a big one if you are consistent at the shorter range....can you see what's going wrong at 1000, or is it a case of "can't see splash so don't know what to correct"? That can be real frustrating.....
Is your ballistic program making sense out to 600?...if it's not awful close, that error will of course be magnified further out. Where do you shoot ? (Not that it matters, just wonder if you are close by, I have an accessible private range for long distance work.) |
Roughly 27 moa should get you pretty close at 1000. You need to either have a large pile of dirt or some kind of back stop so you can spot your misses.
|
Nailed it
You guys nailed it. I cant see the splash and cant correct. I hand load so I know my ES and its below 20 FPS so In theory I should be on. I have a Kestrel for wind but wind can change several times in that distance. Ill get it eventually.

You need a 6.5 of some kind

Nice work there Mark. If you’ve got enough freebore, you might try some Ber 130 VLD(H) pushed by H4350 in that ‘47. I’ve never had much success with with the shorter 6.5 bullets in any of my ‘47’s (8 twist).

thanks

Just thought of something
Just because I have a bunch of Varget doest mean I cant buy a pound of H4350 to try it and see if I can get a good load. I hear you can push the limits a bit more with the H4350 before pressure signs
|
Yes when you can’t spot your misses a guy can waste a lot of ammo. I have tried shooting my 1100 yd target after a fresh snow and misses are almost impossible to spot.

I agree that 3000 fps should be possible. My RBROS 6.5X47 with a 26" Broughton drives a 130 Berger hunting at 2980 fps with lapua brass, CCI 450, and 42.2 gr of H4350. A 140 gr out of that 30" pipe should work really well if it's throated right. You shouldn't have a problem at 1000 yds if you are ok at 600. How big are your gongs? Maybe put up a whole sheet of plywood or larger gongs. I find out to 700 yds you can get away with some small errors. But from 700 to 1000 you better make sure everything is consistent. What ballistic APP are you using? If your drops line up perfectly at 600 they should be good at 1000.

Out shooting today
Was out again today. I hit 15 out of 15 at 500M and went 14 out of 15 at 600M Was pretty happy with that.
My Gongs are 14 inch from Alberta Steel Targets. I cant put plywood or even dirt behind them becasue the cows freakin wreck everything or use the dirt as scouting outpost. In fact I cant even leave the gongs in the pasture but I have to carry them across the fence to keep the delicous bastards from destroying them. So ya I am going to be fighting an uphill battle to hit at 1Km I use 2 ballistics programs and they are within .1 mill of each other on most shooting solutions. (iSnipe & and Vortexc LRBC) |
Our cows knock our targets over at 1100 yds all the time. Just part of shooting in a pasture. I actually need to make a bigger base so they can’t knock them over.
