Which 6.5 mm hunting bullet are you guys using?

Hey fellas. Now that I have joined the 6.5 Creedmoor fan club and received by pin and pom poms, I am wondering what hunting bullet you guys have chosen.

Like many of you, I am mostly hunting deer, with the odd moose thrown in every few years. This year, I will be drawn for my cow moose, and possibly cow elk, so I didn't want to go with a cup and core. I decided to have my Load Development Engineer (Elk11) give 125 Partitions a whirl, largely because I always chime in to the 6mm and .25 cal crowd to use Partitions, and thankfully they shoot just fine. Really looking forward to seeing how they perform on game.

What bullet are you using in your 6.5mm hunting rifle and why?

Lets keep this to a positive discussion please.

129 nosler and 143 eldx

58thecat 01-10-2019 06:56 AM

Barnes TSX 120gr

If they group well......good luck.

DiabeticKripple 01-10-2019 07:09 AM

I plan on using 143gr ELD-X in my Stag 10 for elk and deer.

Beeman3 01-10-2019 07:15 AM

I shoot the 130 Berger Hunting out of my 6.5X47 at 2950 fps. In my second X47 I shoot the 130 AccuBond at 2850 fps. Out of my 6.5 Sherman it's 140 Berger or 142 and 150 gr Matrix at 3200 to 3339 fps. For what you are wanting to do and moose and elk in the mix I would see if your gun likes the 130 Accubond. It has worked well on deer for me, but so has the Berger.

130 Accubond was my next choice if the Partitions didn't shoot well.

So far only the 147ELD, but will try the 127LRX this winter.

6.5

I use the 140 Berger in my 6.5x284 norma . very accurate and have taken several deer and one elk with it. Deer go down very quick, The elk was at 350 and i waited for the broadside lung shot he ran about 75 yds. Performance was good in all my experiences with the berger. Energy was expended inside the animals.

waterhaulerhunter 01-10-2019 08:09 AM

143gr eldx has worked fantastic out of my 6.5-284 on 4 deer, 3moose, and an elk so far. Shots ranged for 80-350yds.

southernman 01-10-2019 08:26 AM

125gr partion and 120gr ballistic tip, in my .260 about 60 deer and goats, to 150M. I like the partion better.
130 gr Accubonds, in .264 win, 4 red deer, 3 sika and one Thar, thus far, to 250m, got sum R33 and 140 gr to try at sum point,

dogslayer403 01-10-2019 08:29 AM

140g berger in my 6.5x284 and in one 6.5x55
140g sst in the other 6.5x55

Both have worked excellence for me with the berger getting the edge it seems to kill a bit quicker. Accuracy is excellent with both

Mostly deer , a black bear and a few wolves

stob 01-10-2019 09:19 AM

156gr vulcan or 160gr hornady - from a rem classic 6.5 x 55

Nova316 01-10-2019 09:28 AM

I shoot the 120gr TTSX, they group well and haven't let me down

I know plenty of guys who use the 130gr Berger Hunting which they absolutely love.

shorty 01-10-2019 10:30 AM

6.5x284 140gr Sierra SBT. Great deer bullet

rem338win 01-10-2019 10:30 AM

I'd look at the 127gr LRX.

Ive pushed 120gr TTSXs to 2900fps ib my friends Creedmore and its doing very well. Id shoot moose and elk with it.

lone wolf 01-10-2019 10:37 AM

while I have not tried the 6.5 CM yet however I was able to achieve superb accuracy in my 6.5 Swede using 140 grain Accubonds. Partitions were "ok" but still require some tweaking.

maxwell1000 01-10-2019 11:48 AM

Very good success with 140 gr partitions in 6.5x55 for deer. Working on some 155 gr lapua mega, looks promising

fish_e_o 01-10-2019 11:51 AM

i have dropped two moose to date with 130gr berger hunting bullets out of a 6.5x47 @2700

lots of deer have disliked this combo too :sHa_sarcasticlol:

WhiteTailAB 01-10-2019 12:10 PM

6.5x284 - 120gr Sierra Pro-Hunters, but I can't seem to find them anymore so I may be switching in the future. Good thread, lots of ideas to look at.

warriorboy10 01-10-2019 12:17 PM

6.5 x 284, hand loaded 143g eldx. 2975 FPS with good bullet weight retention and these bullets are a decent price.

260 Rem 01-10-2019 12:46 PM

Berger 130 VLD (H) from my ‘47’s @ 2850 MV. Like advertised, make into the boiler room and come apart. Nothing is going too far after that. They are plenty consistent to use for group shooting. I can speed them up to 2900 FPS MV but groups start to open up. They would not be my first choice for elk.

TUFFBUFF 01-10-2019 12:50 PM

I used 130 accubonds and swift s2's last couple. and 120 tsx will kill as well. All depends how far and what want to shoot. Partitions haven't been known to be super accurate compared to stuff out nowdays.
with your slower starting speed maybe a 140 will hold velocity better at distance, you'd need to run some numbers.

I want to try the 127lrx as an all round go to, seen a post on us forum where they tipped a few over way out there with it and seemed to work.

marky_mark 01-10-2019 06:57 PM

I’ve used the bergers in a 26 nosler or a 6.5x284 and had pretty good luck. 100-591 yards They do a number on internal organs. Only one animal went more than 15 feet. Most were drt

elkhunter11 01-10-2019 07:26 PM

We have used the 129grABLR, and the 130 Accubond with great success, but I am going with the 130gr Sierra Gamechanger in the 6.5 CM. But they are a very long bullet, not great in short magazines.

urcayuse 01-10-2019 08:19 PM

Used the 143 eldx on several elk. They work quite well but I was under the impression they were a bonded bullet but they are not.

Maxwell78 01-11-2019 06:43 AM

160 woodleighs in my 6.5x55

might be too long for the creedmore though

What is the ROT 1-9 ? I have a Win 70 FWT that is 1-8 and 156gr Sako makes one hole while 160gr Hornady shows signs of tipping with poor accuracy. I load either with 42gr of N204 or IMR4350 and the above heavy bullets. Will penetrate 2 moose and a fire hydrant. You can eat right up to the bullet hole.Great bullets in the military Swedes.

That's a neat bullet. Looks like it could penetrate for miles. :)

The Creed was specifically design to shoot long bullets. That 160 should be no problem, if the OP decides to use it. (Some of the ELD/VLD type bullets commonly used in the CM are even longer)

I’m in this camp also.
