Well last year I made a jaw jacker and man did it work well but my wife bought a plastic gimmick that was supposed to move up and down in the wind and had a spool on it....well -20 and this thing went south and I watched her eye ball my set up so yesterday I made her one too....30” long so you get an idea if the laker as over or under at a glance:)
Nice weather to get all in order for the upcoming ice fishing season:sHa_shakeshout:

Looks pretty good - although I use the jaw jacker and it's collapsible, reliable, etc... and has a good trigger mechanism I am always worried about plastic in the cold.

I'd prefer something a little more robust - and I like the idea of a wooden base - what's the set up on the trigger mechanism?

Can you post some close up pictures of that?

So basically it is a piece of coat hanger bent to accommodate the end of the rod and the line goes out through a U shape end which sits over the hole.
When the fish pulls the line this triggers the mechanism to set but you can bend the end that goes into the rode eye to adjust sensitivity to the bite just gotta play with it to the type of fish you are targeting etc

Kinda like this and I will put a bell on them too just so if I am not paying attention I can hear it go off.
Last year I had great success with mine for lakers often it out fished me.

Looks great. Simple, effective and no plastic to break or small part to loose.

Sorry. First "fish slapper " that came to mind.

The fish board is cool and the bent coat hanger looks reliable in cold weather.

I made one last year but never hooked up, it kept missing strikes. Any tips for increasing hook rate?

You got to play with the metal rod hanger end a bit to set sensitivity.
Also the amount of bend in the rod for the force of the set....this can be increased or decreased by the length of the metal rod you use making the bend in the rod more or less which will reduce or increase the force of the hook set.
Once I got that dialled in I then play with sensitivity by increasing or decreasing the bend in the metal rod part that fits into your fishing rod eye end.
I hang the unit off a bench and set it up then just pull the fishing line to get an idea of the sensitivity and amount of force in the hook set....ohh don’t put your head anywhere near the rod when adjusting cuz your gonna get a whack upside the head:sHa_sarcasticlol:
Good luck:):)
