First Cutbow

I've never caught a cutbow before, but I pulled this one up through the ice yesterday at Beaver Mines Lake. It was a fairly good fish, I wonder if it got washed in to the lake from the Castle system during the floods a few years ago?

Orange slashes doesn't mean it has Cutthroat in it. Often fish eating lots of scuds show some orange.
It is very unlikely the breeders at the hatchery have Cutthroat genes.

Interesting, I did not know that.

Nice fish. Send the pic, a couple scales and a fin sample to a F&W lab. They might be interested in identifying it.

I didn't keep it, I thought it might have originated from the Castle.

Last spring I caught a full out cutt there. Come in from the creek, same way the bullies are in there

I would say it was 20" at least, although not quite as thick as it was 2 weeks ago. Ice was covered with drifted soft snow, so it's going to get pretty sloppy out there soon. I didn't see any gophers out, but I wasn't really looking for them on the drive home.

Here's a pic from yesterday to give you some idea..

Cool catch! We've seen multiple bulls on the camera this year ice fishing, on multiple trips, so there's more down there than I expected lol.

It's not aerated, I don't think it's really ever had winter kill problems. There are quite a few columbian ground squirrels in the area during the warmer months, but I don't know if you can shoot them in that area any more now that the classifications for the area changed. Hunters need to get a firearm discharge permit now, so I don't know how that applies now to target shooting, plinking, or varmint shooting, even with an air rifle less that 500 fps.

That's all Rainbow. Yes, some subspecies of RNTR exhibit slashes.
