1-5x24 for hunting?

Never owned one of these scopes. Considering purchasing the Leupold 1-5x24 or 1-6x24. Thinking it may be a good fit for my 338-06, my moose and elk bush gun.

Pro's - lighter weight (then what I own already). Smaller package (then what I own currently). Awesome FOV for the bush.

My only concern is how much light the 24mm Objective will let in on the Vx5 and Vx6. I've never looked through one. Will it be a hinderance at first and last light?

Does anyone hunt with these style of scopes?
Most reviews I've seen on youtube for these style of scopes are for 3- Gun Competitions and such.

I have a 2-7x36 on a short 308 and a 1-5x30 ( 30mm tube) with illuminated dot in the reticle on my shorty 303 I love both for dark timber. Im also a fan of small red dots and peep sights with fiber optic front bead ( on all my levers) for timber hunting. My 2cents is give it a try. Go to the store later in the day and ask to try outside in lower light. For sub 200 yd hunting in timber I don't think you will be disappointed.

if you got the time head out to store and see a few scopes......you might be surprised on the outcome.

I have a leupold vx3i 1.5-5x among other low powered variables . It's a suitable scope for your purpose. Hunting always ends 1/2 hour after sunset. You'll be fine with said scope.

I have used 1.5x5x24 Leupolds on 45-0, 375 Win etc. Scope makers pick objective sizes very carefully. It is not a random outcome. Objective size is related to the ratio of power to the objective. So a 1.5-5 at max power gives 5/24 for a ratio of 5. 5 is generally considered to be the maximum light a human eye can use, with good young eyes. As you get older you can't use as much of the available light. If you turn it down to 1.5 you get 16, so lots of light. This is also the right choice for higher powered variables, as you get close to dark turn the power down to get a brighter sight picture.

I have used a 1.5x5x24 with no illuminated reticle night hunting pigs in Texas. On 1.5 power I had no problem whatsoever in shooting pigs at 1 in the morning at 1-250 yards. For night hunting a red illuminated reticle that can be turned down real low would have been nice, but I used what I had and it worked just fine.

I had a low powered leupold 1.5x5 x24 on my 338 mag for about 8 years
It just did not gather in light or gave much of a field of view.
I now have a 3.5 x10 on it and I am much happier

Can't speak to how your eyes perceive the transmitted light but I really am not following your comment about Field of view.

Right from Leupold's web site;

1.5x5x24 FOV low 68 feet at 100 yards, 24' on high, 3.5x10x40 Low FOV 29' at 100 yards and high 11'. A low power scope must have a larger field of view even with the smaller objective. So on high or low, over double the field of view and this remains true at all ranges. That is why low power scopes are ideal and used for close quarters, bush, etc.

Just so we don't confuse the OP.

I’ ve Killed a ton of deer and moose with low powered scopes and and irons some of them at a distance many consider “ unshootable” with those sighting systems !:thinking-006:
Fir low light conditions a 1-4x or fixed 4 or 6X scope works fantastic .:)
Shortest kill last year for example was 40 yards on a white tail and the longest was 254 yards on a moose calf with a 200 meter zero .

I've used 1.5x25 Leuopold on multiple rifles, I find the light gathering at dawn and dusk better than 3x9-50 at short ranges, most deer and moose are shot closer than you one might think.
Sitting in a stand an animal at 50 ft. is much easier to find in your scope with the wide field of view

Absolutely !
I think the shortest distance I ever shot a deer with a scope was 30 paces and that was s 1-4x on 4x:)

I've got one on my 9.3x74,
Great scope for sensible ranges,
If you want to have a look at one, give me a call,

Hard to mimic lowlight conditions in a store..

My go-to rifle has a 1-4x on it, I can make a 300 yard shot with it if I need to, though it rarely comes off of 1x. You can get that thing on target real fast, I don't shoot at running game, but I can easily keep them in the crosshairs and get a shot off the instant they pause. With a low power scope the gains are far greater than the losses IMO.

I shot that canoe hunt moose at first legal light with it set on 4x, and it was plenty bright.

x2, narrow field of view is completely untrue.
