Primitive weapons definition

Hi,
Once again I got the primitive hunt draw for which I cannot use my crossbow, which I find quite annoying. A crossbow is a very primitive weapon, and a flintlock buddy of mine has said that crossbow locks have been found in China dating from 650 BC.

I have the permit, and it's only a tad faster than my husband's new Hoyt bow. I now have to go out and buy a muzzle loader that I may use maybe 2 times in my life, whereas I use my crossbow a lot more, both in bow and rifle season.

Why is it not considered a primitive weapon? Not looking for the usual smart4$$ comments. Guys are allowed to bring bows, flintlocks, and muzzle loaders which are a lot less primitive than my little crossbow...sigh...

:confused::confused::scared::rolleye2:

I may want to talk to the government about why it isn't considered a primitive weapon, I mean c'mon now. Do they think Wainwright will be overun with crossbow users? I highly doubt it, there are so few of us disabled hunters that have this permit to begin with

A crossbow is not a primitive weapon, they were designed by aliens from the future. Better go get yourself a modern inline muzzleloader for the traditional weapons hunt. 😂

No kidding...

Why is it not considered primitive? In the hunting regs for Parkland WMUs (200 Series & 728, 730, 936) for example, it states : Primitive Weapon –muzzle loader, shotgun, cross-bow, bow & arrow.

I know for the Wainwright base hunt as another example, primitive weapons excludes shotguns and was never able to find a sufficient answer why.

You’re getting primitive mixed up with traditional. Primitive is arrows and balls not bolts and bullets. Traditional is pickup trucks and spotlights.

Federal lands...their house , their rules. I suggest that you contact the base commander

They are if you have a disabled permit.

Gunwerks ML is touted as “realistic one MOA @500y” with a 325gr bullet hitting @1600fps impact velocity.....primitive indeed.🙄

So... you entered for the primitive season when you don’t own a primitive weapon or have even read the rules....and your upset that you have to buy a new gun????

Hell any reason to buy a new gun is reason for celebration!! :sHa_shakeshout:

well they don't really like it when you jump the chain of command like that! i contacted base enviro who organizes the hunt and got a less than sufficient response.

I dunno, never been interested enough to look into feeding a $8000 muzzle loader.....but I think it eats smokeless?

marky_mark 07-19-2019 12:24 PM

They use blackhorn 209 or smokeless
Some states require black powder or substitutes

fatboyz 07-19-2019 08:24 PM

It says muzzleloader and bow and arrow. Have you checked with Fish and Wildlife specifically about crossbow.

Sshhh - the '80s have been over nearly 4 decades. It's okay, I have a friend that can set you up with a truck mirror mounted on a tripod.:sHa_sarcasticlol:

hawken 07-20-2019 09:06 AM

Or you could just buy this gun.

No, We have a blackpowder already. We shared it the last time. Husband is already buying one for me but I would have preferred my crossbow you know

Smoky buck 07-20-2019 12:15 PM

You knew the rules before applying and now you’re complaining about them

Why can’t people just go out and enjoy the variety of hunting opportunities and stop complaining because not all season conform to their personal style is beyond me :sad0020:

Be happy you were drawn go enjoy your hunt and be happy you have the ability to participate in the hunt. There are many out there who would gladly have your opportunity without complaining

West O'5 07-20-2019 12:28 PM

You have the disabled permit, what’s stopping you from using your xbow?
Are the rules specifically different on the base that would supersede Alberta bowhunting regs to exclude xbows even with disabled permit?
I somehow doubt it,I’ve hunted extensively on CFBGagetown for decades, crossbows have been allowed on CFBG no problem/no question since they were first legalized in NB in 2011.

Full Curl Earl 07-20-2019 08:38 PM

Geez

And another unreasonable roasting for a fairly reasonable statement, and I dont even like crossbows!
I actually thiought you could use a crossbow on the base during primitive weapons season, just not in the small Bow Only zone on the base.

landowner 07-21-2019 01:56 PM

My son says my 1970s 270 with its original 4power scope is a primitive weapon lol

marky_mark 07-21-2019 02:36 PM

my best guess is they dont really want more people potentially tracking animals, That could run into closed areas

Too many trees and branches for most shots with an arrow

That’s not true, if a bow will work a crossbow will...

I would guess that there is maybe 2-3 animals shot with a bow during primitive weapons hunt

I’d agree, because it’s not a long season folks use what’s most effective. I used a Hopkins and Allen 50 cal. Underhammer and lead balls over my bow. But I know if I had enough time there is not a bit of a problem to kill animals in that topography with a bow even easier with a crossbow.
