Edmonton Area - Willing to lend a scope mounting/lapping kit?
Hi All, I've got some bases to change out and one other scope to re-mount. Anyone around town have a mounting kit and/or lapping bars they'd be willing to lend or help me out? Drop me a DM.

I have fixed a few guns bought from the south side store that friends had bought and i guarantee none where lapped.Just a basic mount from what i have seen. I have always mounted my own and its really not that hard and i am surprised how many shy away from doing their own mounting. If your going to have anyone mount a scope in edmonton i would use P&D or better yet buy a lap set from them and be set forever.
To the OP sorry i would have you over to use my set but its the middle of hunting season so spare time is short and im old school about loaning out my tools. |

P&D will also do it, I think for $25 if you didn’t buy it there but I bet it’s done right.

I would not deal with cabelas I had them mount a vortex hst and they crushed the tube.

Do it yourself, or at least be actively participating. It needs to be set in the rifle to you, not just dropped in the rings. Such a small movement of even 1/4" can change the way it feels in your hands and go from uncomfortable and awkward to easy shooting and accurate.

I would lend you mine but I'm up in gp. A bit of a drive for a half hour job

I won’t lie, I have bought many guns from cabelas, but every time, excluding one, I have been so sad to listen to them talk about guns. For $15/hr it must be near impossible to hire qualified people. Never mind allow them to mount my scope, worth a months wages. I will say this. At cabelas south I had an amazing experience and talk with a young gun guy. Remington, no joke, the guys name is Remington, at south Edmonton cabelas, is the best gun counter guy I’ve ever met. Go see him. To answer the OP, buy all your own equipment, and learn to do all your own gun related tasks. Would you hire someone to clean your rifles too? Mounting scopes is easy and lapping kits are not very expensive.

Would you ever do something you were good at for $15/hr?

Ceadog, I have everything here that you would need. I am just east of you.

You can make your own ring lapping tool pretty easy. I bought a long 1" bolt and cut the threads and head off. I drilled a hole through the shank near the middle, I shove a long 3/8 bolt into that hole and use it to turn the shank. Coat the rings with valve lapping compound, give the tool 100 cranks, tightening the ring screws slightly every 25. Then clean everything off, use a marker to color the inside of the rings and give the clean "lapping tool" a couple cranks. Inspect the rings to see how good the contact is... repeat as necessary.
For bore sighting... just look down the bore and center the crosshairs. Just be aware, when centering the crosshairs to the bore the movements will be backwards of bringing the bore to the crosshairs (IE, when sighting in.) |
Thanks to a very nice AO member I have a professionally machined lapping and alignment set of my very own. If anyone else is looking, I’m happy to lend mine or help install a scope.
