17wsm
Going to fork out $700 for the cabelas B Mag target bolt action rifle. I am curious if any fellow AO members have purchased or used this rifle? Cons pros? I am not reloading. Feedback is appreciated.

Have it, love it. Paired it up with the Cabelas Euro scope (made by Meopta) and shoot targets between 100-200m away. This thing is unreal, bough the rimfire spinner targets for fun when they were on sale and hit the 2 inch round plate every time. No regrets what's so ever.

Shes absolutely devastating!
That round is nasty! Great pairing with that rifle |

I didn’t know reloading was even an option?
Factory primed cases?? Anyway.....enjoy.Pretty impressive lil cartridge,I was intrigued when I seen a couple rifles in .17WSM on the rack awhile back and did some homework and comparisons on all of the .17s both rim and centerfire.....I’m just trying to convince myself I need one with a legit excuse to justify buying one....ie;legal night hunting for preds with rimfire,I’d be all over a .17WSM |
savage
save your money and buy some thing worth owning 17 wsm great little cartridge savage rifle not so much

I agree. I have a .204 and I love it but have a few yotes in a rimfire only areas near cities so that was the excuse for the purchase😁🤗. Excited to try it on a yote. So far I polled some squirrels and 8/8 Squirrels hate it. |

It's a rimfire so no reloading possible. The cartridge is a little light for consistent coyote kills. One of my hunting partners used one for a season and although a lot of coyotes died he also had a lot just keep on truckin after a boiler room hit. Works great for brain shots on beavers though.

It might be up to the job of coyote...but I wouldn't bank on it. If it's a rimfire only proposition, it might be worth a try. Personally, I think I'd trust 22mag out to 100 yards at least as much, if not more. Better ammo options, all kinds of guns out there at 1/2 that price, etc. $700 could get you a nicer 22mag than that Savage for sure, something like a CZ452....and have a little $ leftover.
Just this guy's opinion. 17WSM is the reason I bought a 17 Hornet. Not a rimfire of course, but I wanted a bigger 17 than HMR...but didn't want to get into the hot centerfires...and didn't think much of the initial reports on 17WSM ammo OR Savage rifle. 17 Hornet has been an awesome shooter, it's all I used on big groundhogs this summer..and they died immediately on impact. Longest shot was 197 yards. |

I find 25 gr. Hornady bullets to be the most effective. less walking wounded. It works very well on coyote to 275yds. I am sure you could easy push the round to 300-350yds. and drop a yote. Wind drift is minimal, accuracy is great, whats not to like. |

I do reload the caliber, and it's not tricky at all. However, only got about 1/2 way through working up the loads when groundhogs started popping up in Ontario...so I shot them all with factory, 20gr ammo and they died just fine. I wouldn't have bothered, but I was getting 1/2-3/4 MOA accuracy on average with it..and groundhogs are big rodents...so good enough! I still have my last round of "refinement" loads to test, and with groundhogs well into their slumber now...it's time! |
I might add...that I found 17 Hornet a little hard to get used to. By that I mean, I found it hard to process getting almost .223-like results, but recoil/report closer to 17HMR...taking longer shots and half-expecting crawl-aways..that never actually happened. I've also always wanted an excuse to buy a 527, but had a couple of varmint guns already..just made sense. A new-ish caliber like 17WSM, coupled with Winchester ammo (Winchester 22, 17HMR, 22WMR have all been lackluster, to put it mildly) and a fairly homely-looking Savage to run it through initially? Just wasn't on the radar for me personally, but I can see the merit if you don't hand load, and don't feel like dumping that much into a CZ.

Ruger offers the the Hawkeye 77/17 in both Hornet and WSM,that’s what I was considering maybe buying?I thought it’d be worth it if I could land some coyote permission around Calgary, but then I moved up north of Whitecourt year n half ago so now I can blast yotes from my front porch with centerfires if I want to so kinda hard to justify the 17 although it’s probably uber fur friendly I’m guessing?

I must say the more I hear about the 17hornet the more I like it. I bought the 17wsm for a few residential areas that don’t allow center fire for coyotes. My .204 is my coyote goto. If your gonna go centerfire and fur friendly, why not a .204 over the 17 hornet?

So much talk about the .17 Hornet I just had to take it out into the gopher patch for one last time... And again it failed to disappoint..Pretty easy hits from 40 - 400yds. 25 gr. v-max H4198 powder.
One word of caution to those thinking about reloading for this cartridge and that is to stay clear of Hornady dies. I have had two sets of them and they are junk, buy RCBS or better and enjoy. |

I found my fat fingers and those brass to be tough though. |

We have used 17 Hornet on coyote and they do just fine if you do your part. |
