2019 Ice Reports
Dunno if we can get a sticky on this to keep it at the top of the page, but...
IT BEGINS!!! I took a drive today, and some of the smaller lakes are starting to freeze over. Muir, Chickakoo, Sauer, and a few others are icing up. Even Devil’s Lake had a few feet of ice around the north shore. I would imagine a little farther north and west they are starting to freeze over as well. It will be a while before the ice is thick enough to venture out on, and remember there is no such thing as safe ice (unless it’s in your drink). Stay safe and have fun this winter! |
Gonna take the boat in for winterizing this weekend and then the hardwater prep begins! Have so many plans and goals for this year, including an entire week in southern Manitoba/NW Ontario at the end of March to really take advantage of March Madness out there. Maybe most importantly, tho, I want to find a true trophy walleye in Alberta this year...they're much rarer than in MB.

-17*C at home this morning, and all the small lakes are entirely frozen over. Looking forward to first ice!
There was a website suggested a few times on here that you could see daily satellite images and watch the ice come or go. Can’t find it now.
I remember those! Can’t remember which website it was either. I’m sure I could dig it up... curious about a few lakes a few hours north already...
I think your referring to Ice Detector. It is on the Angler's Atlas website though i don't see that option anymore. I found a youtube vid about it (it says Beta so maybe it is defuct now). Maybe there is a certain data the option is enabled?

Drove over both the N. Sask and Battle Rivers yesterday. There were ice flows developing on both.

I think we’ll start seeing some reports this week from guys making the trek to higher elevation and outlying lakes. I know a few people are out on lakes towards Hinton!
dugouts at work are frozen over, no fish in them unfortunately
Almost a foot on an alpine lake I was on today. Made chopping with the hatchet a bit of a chore! Closes at midnight until July unfortunately.

there are plenty of trophy walleye north of Highway 1 as well... just a lot harder to find!
I'll get a measurement on the ice at home on the lake today and report back. |
At the other end of the spectrum, anyone know if it's possible to get a boat in at McGregor? I'd like to do one more open water day.

No go on a report for McGregor, but the ice at home was just over 2” thick this morning 20 feet off shore. As the overnight temps drop this week ahead I’ll report back.

only ice in the drinks here in Portugal
an ice thread, crap, we left southern Alberta for Portugal a couple of weeks ago and the wind was howling and 15 above, here in the Algarve it is above 20 day and night but they keep bringing me fish with the eyeballs staring at me and all the bones in - rather have my nicely filleted pike from ice fishing - huh - all this talk about ice fishing is getting me homesick - but the beer is pretty good to wash down the sea bass
2 inches on the inlet at keho,, half the lake frozen. the odd spot to chuck a line. lots of broken ice at shore, too much to pull a fish past. could still load a boat if you needed though.
chestermere lake looked all frozen from the bridge south this morning
clear lake is frozen
Don't suppose the weight of all this snow is going to help the ice trying to freeze right now, eh? Yeeeeeeesh.
Looks like Big Lake outside St Albert is covered, Saour and Chicacoo are covered
