$2000 to spend on Coyote rifle.
 

As the title says if you had 2 grand to spend on a coyote rig what would you get? This means all in; rifle, rings, bases and scope. I have a CZ 527 in .223 that I use right now and I love it but I am thinking about a change. My thoughts are on a Tikka T3 Hunter in either 22-250 or .243 with a Ziess Conquest 4.5-14X44 scope. Might take it over budget by a few dollars but i think it would be a sweet setup.

Sounds like a good choice in rifle and optics and caliber. 243 allows another deer rifle in the arsenal and a varmint back up. those 55 grain 243 bulllets are smoking at over 4000 fps.
Lots of other choices in optics under $1000 and rifles to keep you under $2000 total. I have a BRNO (CZ) 22-250 with a Leupold scope as well as the Varmint Stalker series of Xbolts from Browning.
They all work just depends what feels best to you.

I have a Tikka T3 .243 heavy barrel. Great gun to shoot. Have a nice scope on it too, I can't recall I have to look at the model. I was out on Sunday shooting silhouettes at 500 yards in a pretty strong head wind. So I'll say +1 for the .243.

Also have a 22-250, not a tikka though, still a great gun to shoot as well.

Savage LRPV in .204 with a Sightron 8x32x56 LRMD for mine. Does a phenomenal job on whistle pigs too.

A .223 will do pretty well inside of 400yds in most reasonable conditions, a 22-250 won't gain a lot for you in comparison to what the 243 can at longer ranges, if that is what you want to achieve. I'd be tempted to perhaps go to a 6mm of some form over a 243 though. That would likely put you more into a custom type gun though rather than an off the shelf unit.

There is absolutely no need whatsoever to buy a scope worth more than about $600 for coyotes... you don;t have time to use any of the features. sight your gun in, practice, then point and shoot. In fact $600 is pricey

You will very rarely ever get a chance at good long shots unless you are a pro sniper who can hit a rolling, bouncing soccer ball at 400 yards.

I suggest a scope with LOTS of eye relief. you need it when using a bipod. Scopes with more than 16 power are best for bench shooting. The Field of view is usually too small at the higher powers. I think 50mm objective is best for this application too.
I suggest a T/C icon is the best deal out their right now for a new, solid, snappy design with out of the box accuracy. Bolt lift is a very short throw with no binding ever. Since it is a short lift and it has bases integral to the barrel, you only need medium rings, even with a 50mm scope and you don;t need to buy bases.

Shorter barrel the better for in and out of the truck whatever it is that you buy.

22-250 is very common and proven. I like to be able to use buddies' ammo, so we all run 22-250. .243 would be more versitile but then you don't have an excuse to buy another gun.

you can cut that by about $200 by buying a regular T/C Icon or save $449 by buying a T/C Venture. Same action and barrell, just a cheap ass stock and cheaper finish on the metal... which would be just fine.

Save your money..... buy some good binoculars.

Best deal on binos right nowe at WSS is Bushnell Legend HD 10x42 $289 mius $50 rebate = $239 comes woth hard case, padded strap, Shoulder harness. They are compact and light and easy to use. Best of all you don;t feel nearly as bad when you drop them as the guy who bought a Zeiss!

My rig. I don;t really regret buying it, I just know I could have gotten same performance with less money. scope mounted in Photo is not the one mentioned above but is very similar. Note 22" barrel on this one (good for the truck)

.257 Weatherby Mag in a Vanguard Sporter, then get a bit of custom work done on it and get a Nikon Buckmaster scope. Thats a bolt gun, If I could go Semi Auto I'd get a match grade AR15A4 by Olympic Arms or DPMS. Full stock, Harris Bipod, The Nikon scope designed for AR's and it would probably be in .223.

You will have a hard time finding a better rifle than your CZ 527 for the same money. My main coyote/wolf/pronghorn rifle is a 260rem, topped with a Conquest 4.5-14x44 with Rapid Z800, but my backup coyote gun is a CZ527 Kevlar in 223, with a Conquest 4.5-14x50.

Sako A7 in 22-250 topped with a leupold vx11 6-18x40AO with bipod and sling $1820. Absolute tack driver even on white box winchester bulk ammo It pulls under .75moa groups. I do wish I had picked a diferent scope as the eye relief on this one is not that generous but Ive gotten used to it.

The coyote hunting style gun/target shooting gun l want to find soon is the AR 180B, l think that makes a great coyote gun from what l have heard.

My dream coyote rig is a Remington Sendero in .300 mag for nice long shots.

And a Bushnell laser range finder scope.

Without taxes I think I hit the $2G mark.

300mag for yotes eh............REALLY! if your gonna go that far get a 338 luapa or a 408 cheytac and get the job done. LOL but seriously I think the OP was for dedicated coyote rigs and I dont think a 300winmag fits the bill.

Oh , I think it fits the bill , thats why I plan on using my T3 300 win mag with 7x21 Bushnell scope on dogs this winter .. No better way to get used to a new rifle than to use it on everything ..Got one last week at 600 yds and thoroughly enjoyed it ..Ammo is a little more than for my 22-250 tho ..lol... well maybe alot more .

I think it's way more exciting calling them in to under 50 yards but thats just me, you still need to reach way out and touch the ones that are to smart. I always thought a basic Rem700 with a bit of custom work to make it shoot, and the 25-06 would make a good team.

when comparing long range ballistics, it stands with most of the varmit cartridges, 'scept maybe the exotics...

I have always wanted a Ruger number 1 in 25-06 for coyotes. I would put a 4.5-14 ish scope of x brand and load er up with some ballistic tips. Or a mini bulk bag of strych nine would b fun too. LOL

thanx .. In all seriousness , I use the 22-250 most of the time but in Feb and march when the dogs start to get a little call shy , we;re going to reach out and touch em .. No more sitting around at 500+ and barking at me .

savage model 11 243 with detach mag and leupold 6x42. an easy 400yd gun, unless you have eye problems, syn stock to beat in the truck and lay in the snow, spend the other grand on ammo and practice. lee

LOL yup it goes bark bark BOOM. I tagged one just shy of that 600yd mark a couple years back with my 25-06 my head swelled up a little and havent hit one past 450 since LOL.

How the hell does the .300 Mag not quailfy as a coyote caliber?

I shoot a 25-06 for my long range coyote rig, but more oooomph and keeping it flat is a goal I want.

Beyond 500yards the 25-06 is losing juice.

My average is 450 with that rig, and my lucky long shot was 750.

That Sendero set up would be my dedicated long range coyote platform.

I also shoot a Ruger #1 in 22-250.

I have several friends who use the 300 mag in customs for long range coyote hunting, they REALLY work past 500!!:sHa_shakeshout:

They are using a 7mm STW. I have heard from a few fellows they like this round for Coyotes.

So if a 7mm STW can be used why not a .300 Mag.

Guns were both post '64M70's one with a hart the ither with a shilen barrel, laminated stocks , one with a 6-24X Bausch and loumb Balvar, the other with a Unertl 20X RTB.
I shot one coyote just shy of 700 yards using a Barr and Stroud Surplus range finder.
This was years before the laser range finders were available!
