Interested in new calibre

Hi all,

I have always shot a 7MM rem mag and have two tikkas. Generally, I'm just hunting deer, but will occasionally get a moose. I'm looking to get a rifle that is a bit lighter shooting. I'm thinking about getting a 270, but am open to suggestions.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.

I hate to be "that guy", but have you considered a 6.5CM?

It's sad that it's become a clichè caliber, but it truly is a dream to shoot.
I bought one last year in a Tikka for my son's first rifle and the thing is an absolute tack driver right out of the box.
Lots of ammo available for it and light enough on the shoulder that a 12yr old can handle it well.
Got his first deer with it last year.
I enjoy shooting it so much that I'm considering one for myself.
Torn between a 257wby and the CM.

Nothing wrong with a 270 either.

Anything 6.5 except, maybe the Grendel ... LOL. :love0025:

If you are planning on shooting factory the 7mm-08 is a great option. If your are a reloader and already have .284 bullets on hand, then have a hard look at the Tikka 7x64 (Brenneke). It is basically the European equivalent of the 280 Remington ........ just way cooler :sHa_shakeshout:

I bought a T3x lite with Tikka's set trigger option in this caliber from Prophet River last year and love it.

Get the 270!!!

waldedw 03-31-2024 06:17 AM

Lots to choose from but you mentioned the 270, it will do everything just as well all those other do, it's just not as sexy, every manufacturer makes multiple models in 270, every mom and pop store carries ammo, you can't go wrong with the 270.

FlyTheory 03-31-2024 06:54 AM

Seen moose come down with a 270… 7mm08 is a great option. As long as you like shooting it and get lots of practice in, you can’t go wrong with any of the suggestions..

If you are shooting heavy 175 loads out of your 7 mag why not just drop down to the lightest load out there . You might even find something around 120 out there . I have some 100 grain bullets for my 7 mag and its very low on recoil .
I loaded them up for coyotes ,but stopped hunting them years ago and now the bullets are collecting dust as they say . If your interested pm .

Agreed

If you are hurting open areas as others suggested the 270 and 7mm-08 are great. Both work for moose too.

If you hunt tight quarters for deer a 30-30 is a great option

Lots of good options depending on your preference and hunting style.

RancheroMan 03-31-2024 07:59 AM

I'd go .243win. With varmint bullets it's great for predators, and 100gn partitions will tip over anything from deer to moose.

This is assuming you're keeping the Mag.

roper1 03-31-2024 08:15 AM

Put a Pachmyr or a Limbsaver on the 7mag.

Dean2 03-31-2024 08:17 AM

Hard to beat the 7 Rem Mag as an all round hunting cartridge. I would keep using that for your hunting gun. I have not found a 270 or 30-06 to kick enough less to make any difference. Stock design and gun weight are the biggest factors affecting felt recoil. To get a noticeable drop in recoil you would need to go to a 250-3000, 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 243 etc.

If you want something lighter kicking to practice with and for fun shooting, I suggest a 223 with a 1:7 twist barrel. Factory ammo or hand loads are very inexpensive, barrel life is exceptional and you can easily practice out to 800 yards with very little cost.

Parker Hale 03-31-2024 08:31 AM

I've been shooting a 270 for the last 20 years. Specifically a Browning A-Bolt II. I shoot factory loads (already have enough hobbies, don't need to add reloading...maybe one day). I shoot the Hornady Precision Hunter with the 145 ELD-X. A great combo for my hunting. Since switching to this round I have taken a couple deer and one bull elk. One shot kill every time. I would recommend the 270 any time.

Redneck 7 03-31-2024 08:47 AM

If you have 2 Tikka's in 7 rem mag, get 1 reamed out for 7prc, always an option.

Nothing wrong with that and you're not likely to have trouble finding ammo, unlike the niche calibers that come and go.

elkhunter11 03-31-2024 10:08 AM

If the main purpose is to reduce recoil, drop to the 6.5s , the 270win isn't a lot softer shooting than a 7mmremmag.

Rio56 03-31-2024 10:54 AM

Maybe just a plain old 308 ..use 130 grain on deer and up to 165 on moose ..

But I believe there is no better deer cardtridge than the 270 win .
Used it on deer for over 30 years and it just flat out works .
Ammo everywhere

I wouldn't agree with this. I used to own a Parker Hale (yes that's where my AO handle comes from). I did not like shooting this rifle at all. 1/2 a dozen rounds at the range and I would feel it in my shoulder for a week. Yes, as stated previously it has a lot to do with the rifle and stock design and that is possibly why that thing kicked so bad. I can shoot the 270 all day long and it does not bother me.

Alberta Bigbore 03-31-2024 11:52 AM

Ive killed elk ..moose... deer and bear with a 270win.

It was my most beloved cartridge but i will never own one again ever since my new found love for the big 300's. 300win mag first... and now the 300 weatherby mag. Since the 300weatherby mag, ive dropped the 338 win mag as there just isnt a point. To it. Lol

One hunt I remember, a wmu936 bull elk. 150 gr trophy bonded bear claws. Got my bull at less than 100 yards. First shot killed him. But i put 5 well placed shots in his boiler room before he hit the ground. He never did take a step though before tipping over.

Other than a varmint cartridge yet.... My favorite battery consists of a 375h&h, 300 weatherby mag, and soon to be 257 weatherby mag.

Rusty50 03-31-2024 12:26 PM

My vote goes to the 270.... Just cant be beat. My 3 go to rifles are 7mm rem mag, 270 win, and 338 win mag. Although I do love them all !!!

Rio56 03-31-2024 12:39 PM

yes , Rusty50

sooner or later we gotta hear from the "little wienies "

I have absolutely no love for the 270 Winchester, but it's track record cannot be refuted :)
If it were me, I'd get a 308 Winchester, but I am not you .:)

My go to, and will always be, .270 WSM in a Tikka

One of the absolute finest shooting rifle I’ve ever owned. I have taken so much game with that rifle, I swear it smiles when I open up the gun safe… Lol

No reason whatsoever except for personal prejudice!:budo:
I enjoyed the 6.5/ 06, and currently use my father's 280 on occasion and like it, but do not like the 277 caliber for no reason.
That does not mean I call it " junk" or " no as good as" , it is a very capable cartridge as I have always stated and I will never not recommend it simply because I do not like it- I don't like raw tomatoes for that matter!:sHa_sarcasticlol:

To me, your situation says 6.5 PRC.

But, their is nothing wrong with the 270 or any of the choices mentioned by lots of great outdoorsmen who’ve chimed in.

They all pretty much kill equally, so don’t fret over the choice. Just buy a new gun from a local gun store, not a big box, publicly owned store.

fishnguy 03-31-2024 03:08 PM

Create a list of calibres “acceptable” acceptable to you, ie 270, 7-08, 6.5, 308, etc. decide on the rifle you want. If buying new, find one on sale (or clearance, better yet) in the calibre from your list. Buy it. Done. Happy hunting.

270 and 308 are easy to find ammo for, sometimes on sale. 6.5cm seems to be always on sale somewhere, not sure why (definitely the cartridge that I see on sale most often).

3blade 03-31-2024 03:44 PM

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 270, however in a rifle with a corresponding weight reduction it won’t kick much less compared to a 7 mag, with factory ammo.

IMO 6.5 creed in a 7 to 8 lb (bare) rifle is probably what you are looking for, with 120 gr TTSX or GMX bullets.
