Time for a new .22.
 

After a couple decades and many thousands of rounds, my aging Savage mkII is worn out and is starting to malfunction, so I'm shopping around for another .22LR. I'd like another bolt action with iron sights, preferably of higher quality than the Savage, but this rifle will be getting packed around the bush a fair bit so I'm not looking for a super spendy safe queen/ range type rifle. I'm open to buying new, but also happy to buy a well used older model. So what rifles, current or past, would you guys recommend to a guy wanting a well made, bolt action utility rifle?

CZ 455 Lux. 'Nuff said.

I owed a CZ 452 with iron sights, really liked it and was very accurate. Recently I found my eyes needed a scope so I sold it and bought another CZ 455 stainless American ( i think its called) and put a Leupold 2-7x32 scope on it. Still very accurate.

CZ are very good value. I would buy another. I think they are around the $500 to $650 range depending on model and specs.

BTW - I bought both my CZ's for hunting .

I know what you said,but...Savage b22. Savage upped their game with this one! Accurate and that AccuTrigger is amazing! Uses a 10 shot rotary mag...stock feels real nice. I have the 16 1/2" threaded barrel.

To go up in quality from the savage a cz in your prefered flavor is by far the best bang for buck out there.

I have a Ruger 77/22 stainless with a boat paddle stock. Super rugged rifle and very accurate.

I did look at the CZ's but the fit was poor for me.

For an iron-sighted gun, you'd be hard-pressed to beat a 452 Lux, or it's predecessor the BRNO 2E. Honestly. I think Anschutz are the best (check out Nordic Marksman in NS), but for an iron-sight gun...I don't believe you need to spend that much. Add those kind of variables, and you're not really exploiting the accuracy potential an Anschutz offers.

I don't mind Savage, and even like the look of the new B-series guns. ZERO experience with them though, haven't even held one.

Cz 452. Mines a little death ray.

Mine is too, but it's a 452 Varmint. Iron sight-less. :) I have a Yo Dave spring/shim kit in mine...but after a few years with it set-up that way, I think I'm going to upgrade the trigger to a Rifle Basix. A gun with that much gopher-killing mojo deserves it. lol

CZ has a number of different models that fit the bill. Guys on the CZ facebook site say that the 457 is a really great rifle too. So don't be scared of that.

The 453 lux is still my favorite iron site rifle though. It has a bunch of features of the 550 line up such as an angled cheek rest, a thick recoil pad (very required in a 22lr LMAO), a very comfortable foregrip, The small stock is curved and hooked in such a way that it's very comfortable to hold, and a set trigger. For me, that one has all the little details just right. Makes it head and shoulders above every other 22 I've used.

I've put thousands of rounds through mine in the gopher patch.

I'm another CZ fan, mine is the 455 Lux.

I dont' like the sights on the 455 lux. I think the ultralux has the tangent sights that can be adjusted without tools.

I handled a CZ 455 that a friend owns, and it is indeed a well made rifle. I don't really care for semi buckhorn sights though. I'm not super picky on my sights, but I like the tops to be flat.

Not knocking Savages, but while I believe I got my money's worth out of that MKII I would like to buy one more nice .22 and have it last me the rest of my life, hopefully even pass it on. At this point I'm not confident that I can trust a Savage rimfire to last that long with the amount of use that I will give it.

CZ's wear in, not out.

I believe you that the CZ rifle is great, but I friggin' hate the safety and I'm not crazy about the semi buckhorns. Therefore I don't think I will be getting one, just wondering if anyone has any experience with the Ruger American rimfire? Never handled one but the safety looks more to my liking, I can live with the sights, and the rotary mag is nice. Short of that maybe I will just pick up an old Cooey in good shape and be done with it.

Just cant bring myself to spend north of $500 on a rimfire I don't completely love.

See if you can find a pre-Rem Marlin. I have one in .22 & one in .22 Mag. Very good guns feel like real wood & steel.

Check out the new 457, they revamped the safety to a North American style.

I got use to the safety pretty fast. I believe piker is correct after moving their operations to America they changed the safeties too accommodate North American taste.

If you are using a scope you will not like the Lux stock.
Go with an American style.

Just as long as you remember to wear long sleeves to keep from being burnt by hot brass.
That aside they are most certainly nice shooters.

A neighbor has an old Remington 511 he wants to sell, I believe one of my uncles has one and IIRC it was a real good shooter. Not sure what they are worth but for the right price I think I might give it a try.

I don't have any issues with the 2 I own in that regard. The lux stock is supposed to favor open sights but I don't notice any difference looking through the Nikons on mine.

They also shortened the bolt throw to 70 degree I beleive.

If I were to buy a hunting 22 today I think it would be a CZ 457 Royal, what a beautiful little rifle.

If you were to consider a lever, I love my little Henry. It is very accurate and fast to shoot. Also good for left and right handed shooters. I have a Marlin XT bolt in a 17 but they also have 22's. Very accurate and we'll built, also good price around $300.
