Maligne Lake

Anyone make it out to Maligne lake this spring yet? How’s the bite been?

Quidgybo 06-04-2021 12:59 AM

I've been watching the Sentinel Satellite site (say that 10 times) that has been posted in other threads and it appears that ice only came off Home Bay Monday/Tuesday. In today's image, the ice still appears, but is receding down the lake.

Quidgybo 06-04-2021 01:04 AM

Sorry, I should have attached the link for you.

https://apps.sentinel-hub.com/sentin...howDates=false

Penner 06-05-2021 04:19 PM

Appreciate the link I use that site once in a while. Don’t think it’s current however. Usually ice is off by the first week of June.

Quidgybo 06-05-2021 11:53 PM

That link is to a current view for 06-03-21. If you look in the upper right corner, you will see a calendar icon with Thursday's date. You can click the icon and cycle back through dates the images were taken (the dates with circles). Hovering over a specific date will show you an approximate cloud cover. It is an wicked tool for lake fishing after Ice Off and can tell you if that drive is going to be worth it. The site does have a steep learning curve and requires you to cycle through dates, change magnification, and change satellite platforms all in the hope of seeing through or around cloud cover.

I'd be interested in hearing any updates people might have too, hoping to hear whether or not the chironomids are hatching yet.

rasta 06-06-2021 07:27 PM

Hello fellow anglers sorry to derail but has anyone ever camped on maligne without booking through parks? Thx asking for a pal lol

The only camping allowed on Maligne is by booking one of the sites through Parks Canada.

Yup. And camping is only allowed at the designated sites on the lake which are situated down the lake accessible mainly via canoe/boat (don’t believe there are walking trails to/from).

Pierre 06-07-2021 09:59 AM

don't

Why would one want to bypass the parks ? If I had booked a site through Parks and canoed down the lake only to find someone in my spot, well...:argue2:

smitty9 06-07-2021 05:50 PM

illegal

Illegal. As it should be. We spot a few every summer at Maligne. Why do people think they are so special they can break the rules?

Here's some math for you:

Rule breakers = $30 random camping pass + $90 K-country pass.

For everyone.

Bad apples spoiling the barrel indeed.

Exactly what I was hoping to hear!

kidd 06-08-2021 04:11 PM

Newbie here. What would be a good fly or two to represent a chironomid as shown in the photo?

Sorry, ignore my question. I did some looking and lots of info here. Thanks.

It’s a beautiful water body. Wish it were tubes, kayaks, canoes, and tinners, only. Those damn cruise boats zipping up and down every 15mins spoils the experience somewhat. Love early mornings and evenings before those diesels spool up.

thumper 06-08-2021 07:16 PM

Just smile and wave - you're a tourist attraction! There's enough room there for everyone to enjoy themselves.

Penner 06-08-2021 07:43 PM

I’ve gotta be on some Facebook/Instagram pages somewhere as them tour boats where zipping by several times while fishing home bay and as I was fighting a bow on the fly rod. Got sunburn from all the flash photography.

Mr Flyguy 06-08-2021 09:16 PM

Reminds me of the time I was on Pyramid Lake and a bus load of Japanese tourists stopped to take pictures of me in the canoe. If I'd actually taken a fish at that time who knows, maybe a Nikon or Canon contract!

Could you? Probably. Should you? No. You're not special, don't be a douche.

I think you'd be ok sleeping on your boat.... Give er.... the Feds created this fiasco when the changed the booking system so I'd say push the boundries to the max.

And people are masters at rationalizing and justifying violating the rules, or at least the spirit of the rules. And the spirit of the rules are clear: camping at campsites only at Maligne. So the only thing left after that is enforcement and fines.

huntsfurfish 06-13-2021 01:08 PM

For those spending the night in their boats.

No need for a fine.

Send out a search party to look for them then bill them for all costs.:):sHa_shakeshout::evilgrin:

Oh what the heck, give em a fine too.:)

Hard to say, they might classify that as random camping.

Your park pass covers search and rescue costs in national parks. Search and Rescue in most Canadian provinces is volunteer based and are non-profit.

fishpro 06-14-2021 06:58 PM

Fished it on Friday and Saturday, a few fish around for sure, the hot weather from a couple weeks ago has definitely got the water silted up.
