I bought a 257 Roberts (not an AI) for my son a few years back and he has shot antelope, deer, coyotes and a couple of moose with it. Still has the rifle and plans to pass it down to his son.
It is a Browning A bolt micro medallion.
Basically only one load that he uses now, and that is 115 gr. Barnes over IMR 4350 powder.

Denazified.......... hmm. So a 98 Mauser without Swastika's I would presume.

What year and code is stamped on the reciever? Just curious . Old 98's are wonderful. I have a 257AI Hbbl. built on a Oberndorf 98.

You know I have one Abe, but I've not been out with her yet. I did pick up a half dozen different loads to see what it's appetitive is like though. If your memory is hazy its that's special run Featherweight Supergrade I'm referring to.

I know......memory is hazy but that is a real sweatheart of a rifle. One of my 257 AI's is a camo laminate featherweight, by the way...but not a Supergrade

Sounds nice. I've always thought the 700 mtn and the Win featherweight were absolutley perfect for the 257.

In my opinion, they are the two nicest looking stks out there.

I had a Win Featherweight in 257 Bob. Sold it and now it is high on my list of guns that I wished that I had kept. Would have been a great first centerfire for my grandson. Oh well, we went to a 7-08 Stevens 200 for him instead.

Hi there, my son was given a Winchester M70 that was rechambered to .257 A.I. in 2012. First handloads were hornady 117 btsp with a load I dreamed up. LOL if the damn thing didnt put all 5 rounds into a .75 hole at 100yds. Hunting load search OVER. Any ways I got him into some elk one morning and my 13 year old got his first elk a 291 yards. The round struck the cow at the base of the neck and exited the left shoulder leaving a 2'' exit hole. Dropped dead where she stood. Good gun, good load. However a gun like this is a topload and well if you want ammo, you have to make it.

ACKLEY ABE 02-22-2013 07:49 AM

Yip thats what I shoot in my 257AI, Hornady's. Book load ....from A.O. Ackleys' book!

It's the only load I've ever been able to use from his book in any cartridge. His loading practices were hottttt...to say the least.

I think he was just guessing at pressures back then.

I found with my featherweight that it needed a fore-end pressure pt and once that was addressed life was good. Havn't had it out for deer in some time. I kinda have a bucket list of rifles I should get out hunting with again before I tip over. This will be one of them.
