Ever catch something already dead in your snare?

While I am new to the snaring world this was a first and I'm sure there will be plenty of firsts along the way. I had one set along a fence line that has been knocked over 3 times. As I approached today I could see something wasn't right, and could see an object beyond the fence.
Awhile ago I set some baits, and thought to myself, will these loose bones possibly ever hinder and prevent a catch on a coyote by knocking down a snare? Then I thought, man I think to much. Found this today, had baited with some elk bones and this coyote had carried this just right and managed to catch the loop. Probably same one that has been knocking it off. Too funny. |
Ever catch something already dead
I've caught bones in my snares a few times, and a deer leg once. My buddy checked his snare one time, and had a 5 point whitetail antler caught in one. I've also had beavers get off lucky, by pushing a branch in front of them, and having it get caught in my 330 conibear trap. Cool picture, thanks for sharing.

The most insulting part is that at this site I haven't had a catch in 25 days. At least there was one in another snare.

He left you a present. :) put it back in the bait pile and see how many times you can catch it.
I posted a similar picture on another site with the lower part of a deer leg that was left for me in a snare and one fella went right off his stick. He figured that the deer had chewed his leg off. :sHa_sarcasticlol: It happens from time to time when you’re baiting with butcher scraps. I’ll take what bait I can get, beggars can’t be choosers, but I like intact roadkill to avoid that kind of stuff. Glad to see that you’re having fun Trapping. :) |
Maybe the elk chewed off his own jaw ..lol. Thx for checking mine while I've been gone .

I use a lot of duck and goose carcasses for bait. Have caught quite a few of them over the years. Sometimes in good snow conditions you can see where the coyote pulled hard on the carcass trying to get his snack out so he could enjoy it elsewhere. I have also caught several coyotes with the duck or goose securely fastened in the same loop as what’s around the coyotes neck!

I caught a coyote dead in snare with a little wild boars head laying close to it. I have never heard of them being in the area but it was kind of neat.

That story would get the Facebook vigilantes wet.... ;) Nice catch KBF, try for a loin next time. |
Found a coyote leg in a snare.
Over at the dead pile a hundred yards away was a coyote carcass missing a leg. |
