Snapper

Just wondering how common snapping turtles are in Saskatchewan, I looked up the range and they are in some areas. They are obviously doing ok since we came across a baby one yesterday . Coolest thing ever I lived there for 5 years and didn't even know they were around.

I've seen them in the reservoir in Calgary, they move amazingly fast getting back into the water. 60 years ago My dad used to catch turtles with a string baited with a bit of meat. He'd sell them to the chinese restaurant in Gravelbourg Sask.

Vicious buggars, take your finger in an instant. Stopped to photograph one on a road in Wisconsin. No matter how I moved, he was always facing me and not in good temper. Bit of a surprise they're in Glenmore though.

Was this one in Sask?/

We used to catch them in Southern Ontario years ago. Some would just fit in a 45 gallon drum. Delicious to eat. You'd never guess it came out of the swamp.

Wow....thanks for sharing and starting this thread Wayne.

I had no idea their could snapping turtles in AB or SK.

And in Glenmore too.

Wayne, you will have to change your sturgeon count signature line here on AO to include your snapping turtle.

There should not be any of these in the Glenmore, if there are someone put them there.

Now that's cool, thanks for posting!

Saw some wild painted turtles at an alpine lake in BC a few years ago, what a nice surprise. Super skittish though

What makes you say that? If they were in the wood river in Sask. 60 years ago why wouldn't they be in southern Alberta?
