who else shoots traditional sidelocks?

I'm curious how many traditional muzzle loader shooters are here, I partly learned to shoot BP from the sticky on the forum.

I've got a CVA mountain rifle .50 flintlock that I built from a kit, and a TC new englander percussion .50 and love em both

Shot sidelock muzzle loaders since 1978, still have several, my favorite is a .58 Fraser River Hawken that has killed a pile of critters from partridge to moose and everything in between.
Won the odd match with it as well......:)

Yup.
50 cal round ball Lymans Great Plains is my weapon of choice.

We have been shooting BP for years. We both have a couple rifles that we like to pull out from time to time. Its great fun. We also throw knife and 'Hawk

calgarychef 01-11-2018 08:04 PM

all I have is a percussion under hammer but I love it

fatboyz 01-11-2018 08:39 PM

Yup, spent the last two seasons hunting with a 50 cal traditions flintlock. Hunted with a TC 54 percussion since I built it from a kit back in 1988. Even hunted grouse and rabbits with them loaded with shot.

petew 01-11-2018 11:23 PM

I have a few PC's and flinters , 45, 50 54,58 cal and a 13 ga sXs. I realy prefer a flinter, over a PC and prefer the 54 and 58 cal over the 45 and 50's.

Mavrick 01-12-2018 06:51 AM

4 for me, 2- 45, 1-50 and a 54. I am looking to add to these if the right one comes along. We have family shoots, spend the day doing it. I also hunt with them. I know it's a soft spot for a few people, but I wish we had more zones and a season just like our bow season.

LeroyvdH 01-12-2018 08:07 AM

Petew got me hooked a few years back.. 32, coupla 50's pc and flint, 12ga pc... Still chasing the dragon..
No honey that's not my gun.. I brought that for the grandson so he can come with us. He likes it.. I think he needs a 62 smooth bore also.. 12g is too much for him..

I have a .54 Browning mountain rifle that's a lot of fun to shoot patched round balls with, I even took a doe with it one year. My daughter has a .50 Traditions deerhunter - that is if she can pry it from my hands. It's my absolute favorite rifle to shoot and carry in the woods. Loaded with a 385 grain chunk of lead in front of 90 grains of 2F it puts big holes in things!!!

skinny d 01-12-2018 09:43 AM

50 cal lyman gpr flint
50cal cva frontier carbine perc
58 cal pedersolli harpers ferry pistol flint

12 ga SxS -- fun for ducks and geese. I am not quick enough on the hammers with flushing dogs for upland 45 cal PC - Kentucky --- so far paper and gophers --- next year I will give my in-line a rest and use the 45 early for deer.

I have a spanish sidelock Hawken, T/C sidelock Carbine and a replica Enfield Tower musketoon, love them all but am waiting for delivery of a CVA Optima smiply due to twist rates. I want to shoot sabotted .452 lead (bought for my 1911) and the traditionals just don't have the right twist rate.

You can buy side locks with fast twist rates for bullets from several outfits, Pedersoli being one.
In shot a.40 sporting rifle once that a friend owned, IIRC the barrel was made by Ron Smith.
Bloody accurate for sure!:)

NW Tradegunner 01-12-2018 07:29 PM

I shoot a number of flinters and cap locks, but favorite is a northwest trade gun .62 caliber smoothbore!

I have a .45 pedersoli kentucky “long Tom”. Is this what you have too? Are you able to use it as a shotgun too?
I’ve used it to take gophers, rabbit, moose and I even killed a 150” whitetail back in the day. Fun for sure. Components are tough to find for .45’s now.

Jack Hardin 01-24-2018 11:51 AM

I have a Pedersoli Pennsylvania long rifle in 45 cal and a Pedersoli Kentucky long rifle in 50 cal, both in PC but, I have a Pedersoli Flintlock Kentucky long rifle in 45 cal on order and should be here next week.
