What do to with a big old (domestic) boar

Hi Team,

Dad's got a small farm just inside Edmonton city limits. He's got a big old boar that's probably 350 lbs. It'll be a PITA to load on a trailer and probably won't taste particularly good.

I'm wondering if people would want it for dog food or bear/trapping bait. Thoughts?

gitrdun 01-16-2018 05:03 PM

Even though he's a boar and fair size, I must disagree on the fact that he may not taste particularly good as you've stated. There's a lot a bacon and ham on that boy. My suggestion would be to butcher him for your own consumption.
If I were closer, I might just consider getting him :)

yoteblaster 01-16-2018 05:10 PM

I agree with gitrdun. I shot and ate a 375 pound wild boar years ago that I took with my bow. I marinated it also which probably helped. Was really tasty

possum 01-16-2018 05:12 PM

Put him on Barley/Oat chop for a month.....Then butcher him.

ceadog 01-16-2018 05:16 PM

Interesting. Some of the quick research (on the academic side, not the blog side) has suggested there's a very high chance a couple year old intact boar is going to be taint-central. It's a lot of work but maybe just to kill, gut and hang, then try a couple samples. It's the boiling and scraping that I'm not thrilled about if we might end up tossing it.

And less important but still annoying, because he's in city limits we can't use a firearm to kill him. :fighting0074:

Pita to load him in a trailer? Put a chicken in there, he'll go right in...LOL!

It would probably make great coyote wolf bait. I’ve tasted old boar when I was a kid at my uncles. Myself, I wouldn’t be eating it.

I agree. Thin him down a bit.

buckbrush 01-16-2018 05:57 PM

Boar taint is said to be be genetic. Some lines are not supposed to have any.

I read an article of a guy who was trying to breed a taint free line. He would biopsy a small piece of the back fat to see if it tasted of taint. I never had the urge to sample one of my hogs though.

The only way to get rid of it that I have seen proven was to castrate then feed for a few months. Big boars will bleed lots though. I haven't done this and after looking at how my 800LB boar moves anything in his way I don't think i would want to try. He's a pet now though as he's too big to breed.

I had a boar die once in the winter. Put him out back and in the spring he hadn't been touched by anything, not even the birds. What a mess.

Also, 350 lbs is a good size for a breeding boar. If he's too big to breed he is way heavier than 350. I have underestimated breeding hogs by 150 lbs before, they are heavy for their size!

fordtruckin 01-16-2018 06:06 PM

I've heard you can feed them fruit and veggies for a couple weeks then if you slaughter them they'll be much better for table fair. At least down south some folks have done that with wild boars. Never tried it myself though as I'm not a fan of pork. (let the flaming for that statement begin....lol)

Butcher and eat. Hams, bacon,Capicola, smoked sausage, fresh sausage, Kassler loins, smoked hocks, pulled pork etc

Boogerfart 01-16-2018 07:01 PM

I'll take him, surprised nobody actually said that yet.

Skin it and save yourself a boat load of work. I usually run a gut hook along the abdomen and along the spine so I remove the skin in two parts. Works well for me.

We usually strip them. About 3-4" strips. Use an olfa knife, set the depth right, and start cutting

Yep, you can skin them , scald them or use a tiger torch.....All 3 ways work just fine. I have done many in my day. If I lived closer I would have offered to take it off his hands.

wildwoods 01-16-2018 07:37 PM

I'll take him if you're looking to get rid of him. Pm me if you like

ceadog 01-16-2018 08:06 PM

I'll see what Dad wants to do. We'll be butching a younger sow ourselves, so I'll have to learn one day. Anyone ever tried killing a hog without the aid of a gun? Searching Youtube brings up some crazy stuff.

Bulldog Edm 01-16-2018 08:42 PM

Wouldn't the best way to kill it be using a bow? I'm in the city and would be willing to come with my bow if you would like.

happy honker 01-16-2018 09:20 PM

Nail gun?

Boogerfart 01-16-2018 09:22 PM

You need to look for a captive bolt gun.

IR_mike 01-16-2018 09:22 PM

Let him run free and terrorize the surrounding countryside.

Might not be the "right" thing to do but could make for some funny you tube vids.

Yup. Cut off the dangling things at the back. Thin him down and then like Possum said pour the chop to him and bring its weight up then into deep freeze.
Would never know it was a boar.

Think I would...

Boar

That thing will taste like hell. Choke him out and give him to Nube for wolf bait.

I think a 22lr between the eyes from up close wouldn't make enough noise to bother anyone, if you think it might, turn on a radio.

Use a Tikka on him. Their butt pads make the stocks a deadly weapon.:)

ghostguy6 01-17-2018 07:44 AM

If your having trouble getting rid of it, I would gladly take some of the meat for sausages and bacon. I'll even help butcher if you want the help.
