I only have one,a very old savage 99 takedown in .250 savage. She was in real rough shape when i got her. Sight filed off both front and back stocks broken. So i was forced to pimp her a little. Just wish that very slow twist would stabilize a premium bullet

Sam... Iffin I was you I would take the time to handle a Winchester 64 (or 64a). The developers took the time to re-design the for-end and IMHO it carries as good as anything held in my mitts.
If it reduces to a 64a be wary of the post 64 sintering issues. I realize the model 64 is subjective in its design but still, something to consider. |
Model 88 in 308 is still my favourite

Marlin 1895 in 45-70

I have several levers. My two favorite levers are
1. my great grandfathers Win 94 in 38-55 with tang sight, all orig. (family heirloom) Taken 3 deer so far. A close second would be Win. 1895 in .405 Win. took me a long time to find it and it has harvested 2 moose and 1 elk so far. She barks but not that bad with a decelerator slip on pad on the bench and handloads will consistently keep just over an inch at 100 yards. Wish I could find an orig. peep sight for it and throw that on. |

Love my Marlin 336C in .30-30 Win
Inherited from my dad. Its fun to shoot (and going to get better once I replace the plastic recoil pad), looks cool, and has a history of dropping animals. Good camp gun, bush gun, and all-around shorter range option. |
Lever guns
I have always been a fan of lever action guns. I own a Marlin 444P outfitter, a Marlin 39AS 22, a Browning BLR 300 win. mag and a Winchester 1894 30-30.
All of them are great guns. |
I very muh enjoy hunting with my henry 30-30 and 45/70, have fun shooting gophers woth my hery 22 and 17 hmr, but my favourite to play with is my rossi 92 stainless in 454 casull.
It goes from a powder puff with 45 colt to a Haymaker with a full boat 454 casull round that rivals 45/70 in potency. Sent from my SM-G870W using Tapatalk |
Marlin XLR 30-30
As much as I like my open sighted '94 30-30's, I really like the looks of Marlins XPR model, A scope would suit it fine.
That and some Hornady 160gr FTX to stretch out the range would balance out nicely IMO. |

Haven't decided yet. Hoping to get down to the gun show over Easter in Calgary and handle a few. Based on what I've read I'm leaning towards a JM Marlin, but want to handle an older 94 as well.

What calibre of Marlin would you like to handle?

But according to Hitchcock45 its $2 US a round. Ouch! |

I'm flexible on calibre. Either way I would need to get reloading dies. A .30-30 might be good for my kids to carry for deer. A 35 would likely be for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
45-70 sbl marlin

I see a lot of good votes for marlin, and I don't disagree, except I'd stay away from the 336W. It's made to be cheap and looks/feels/functions as such.
I loved my uberti though, probably my favorite that I've had |
I have a Marlin 35 Rem that I will never get rid of, a Marlin 30-30 and 444marlin that I won't let go either and a winchester 94 30-30 top eject. I have had a Winchester 88 that was a great shooter, couple savage 99's that I regret selling.
I might be picking up another 99 in the next couple days. I love levers:) |
My Henry 22 is as smooth as butter and chews through any brand of ammo without jamming.
My Marlin 1895 SBL is pretty new to me and is just awesome to shoot as well. A real thumper I think I can use for lots of different hunts in the future |

Got a marlin 1895GS 45-70. Marlin 336bl 30-30. Henry 30-30 in brass reciever octagonal barrel. Beauty of a rifle. But my 45-70 is my fav. First gun I ever bought and have take a dozen deer with that one. Will never sell it.

Savage 99's 303, 300, 308-really like them. Win 1895 in 303 British shoots well with a very smooth action. Old Marlin in 30-30, need to put a peep on it - cycles really nicely. Not moa rifles but great for hunting, light and carry nicely.
