This is the first time I that I'm going hunting and going to stay in a hotel, which should be nice.It just occured to me that where do I keep the gun.
In the truck or do you take it up to your room?

If you store it in your room, you may be storing it illegally. If you case it and put it out of sight in your vehicle it is in transit and fully legal. Go figure.

If you are in the room just store it, you are in care and control of it, keeping a low profile and keeping it cased is also a good idea. If for what ever reason you leave the room, use your vehicle to store the firearm, unloaded and out of sight is the minimum standard.

chilly willy

if it is minus a hundred degrees out and i am going to sit for the morning hunt, I will leave it in the vehicle overnite. and put it in the cased truck box for travel to the stand, just so it doesnt have to go through all the temp changes/ fogging scopes, (rusting to lesser extent) potential icing problems etc...
if im just truck hunting in the am. i bring it in a take it to a warm truck from the motel for the same reasons.
most of the times thou it ends up in the room with me.

In your room

What is wrong with storing a firearm in a hotel room? If it's a non-restricted long gun and it is secured with a trigger lock inside your room what is the problem? I've done this for extended periods of time (months at a time and outside of hunting season) when it would not have been responsible to leave it in my vehicle in a parking garage. Vehicles were always being broken into. So as not to alarm house keeping staff, I've kept them in a closet and in a case (trigger locked of course).

Can you point to something that I am missing?

I BELIEVE that your hotel room is your legal residence when you travel, that's why you can drink in it, etc. I would ASSUME the rules for your home would apply there.

As far as the truck part goes, I'd worry about theft.

I think the suggestions posted over what to do are driven by a lot of past experiences or percetion. If you've had your vehicle broken into you would suggest the room route, if you ever had issue with hotel security you'd be prone to suggest the truck route. Either choice is legally correct, the debate involves personal choices driven from perception and or past experiences.

Thanks for the information, I guess I could leave the dog in the truck with the gun but if the dog was missing then I couldn't go home.

I'd be careful about taking the firearm from the cold into a warm room. May get condensation which will be a problem when you return to the cold.
