Cool video. Thanks!! We fished it Tues night with the same tackle. Had couple dozen on, probably 15-18 into the boat. Great fishing!!

Ripping the hook out of their mouths with pliers...nice!:mad0100:

Nice fish.
Do you think changing out your trebles for single hooks would be a good idea to reduce the amount of tissue damage?

AK47 07-25-2020 09:23 AM

Nice fish, well done and thanks for sharing!

I started doing this and purchasing hooks that are debarbed for me.

Absolutely. There is no good reason for using treble hooks on trout in a catch & release river. It's very easy to swap them for a single. If they have a split-ring, remove the treble hook and substitute a similarly weighted octopus or similar wide-gap hook to get proper set and hold. If they don't have a split-ring (for instance on Rooster Tails and such) cut the treble hook off with some pliers and put on a siwash hook. These hooks come open at eye-end and can be slipped on and then pinched down with pliers. I have experimented with different sizes and hooks to see effect on lure action and it's really easy.

With trout I don't see any benefit to using a treble at all. All it does is increase fish mortality and tangle up in your nets. The odds of sticking them in the eye is pretty significant. If you're fishing for pike or bass or other fish with hardier constitution and tougher mouths, I can possibly see that making sense ( I don't, I've swapped all my pike lures to single without any noticeable drop in hook-ups) but for trout, not at all.

Changing hooks and using barbless is good idea. I find at least removing the belly hook makes a big difference in quick release and accidently doing damage with free hook.

kc_okotoks 07-25-2020 02:43 PM

awesome fishing . thanks.

58thecat 07-26-2020 08:21 AM

Rapella F4 rainbow trout pinched barbs with the belly one removed.....

Smoky buck 07-26-2020 09:04 AM

A barbless treble makes a big difference or bend the points over if you are still finding issues. Removing trebles from the belly of a crankbait can effect the balance. Replacing with singles of similar weight does work

Personally find a barbless treble is fine and easy to remove. I also find treble don’t penetrate as deep because of where the three points meet.

For 10 years I tested the results of treble vs single on rainbows in a private closed system. When it comes to lures a barbless treble vs a barbless single is very close with both having advantages and disadvantages over the other when talking mortality and long term damage.

Personally I will take a barbless treble of appropriate size any day. I have my reason and backed by close controlled observation where I could see long term results beyond just seeing fish swim away out fishing

Either way appropriate handling and limited handling time is important.

your right there smokey...if you adjust your lures ensure you see what the action was prior to and after....a little tweaking can be a good thing or throw it for a loop....oh and gonna spend all today with your lures dedicated to reek havoc on the pike...more to follow.....:)

That 4 inch model in pink/white/red and chartreuse/white/orange/black have caught LOTS of pike in my boat in the last 3 trips. I need to make a 6inch version

I may need to break down and go test it on walleye since that is what it was built for even though they bore me. Need to fix the boat first after breaking it yesterday :(

Two new models in the works right now including the requested shallow diver

See and do the above suggestions to your sportfishing for less mortality and I will do so.

If you acknowledged all of the comments on safer fish handling you may actually gain some traction. Until then, no one wants to see you ripping the lips off the fish in a catch and release river.

Should have named your video "Rippin Lips"
As mentioned above, Why the use of barbed hooks in a catch and release water system? Do it right and fish can be caught without barbs.

Time the regs were changed. In BC its single hooks only in streams.

tikka250 08-30-2021 07:11 PM

Ahh good ol outdoorsman forum. Where someone posts about their passion and is torn apart by holier than thou experts.
Great job and great video!

And barbless as well!

CardiacCowboy 08-31-2021 08:40 AM

Careful what you wish for. I would not be against those regulations changes suggested but ..... the next step would be the bow being fly fishing only. I remember this being considered in the past.

Lornce 08-31-2021 02:59 PM

I will wish for barbless only also.

dmeinder 09-02-2021 01:34 PM

Great videos and thanks for the lure tips for rainbows. I personally don't see any issue with what your doing. In fact, you're handling far less than many do that take multiple pictures, yet use single hooks to be nice to the fish...somewhat ass backwards there. All your hooks came out very easily, and no blood or flesh was torn. I think the jealousy is rampant is all.

Cheers ! (I subscribed, keep it up!)
