300 WSM users?
 

Who uses the 300WSM and what do you, the one with experience with the 300WSM have to say about it? Good bad?

I have to say I'm a little recoil sensitive and mine kicks the crap out of me, I'm looking to sell it and go back to the 300 win mag. the WSM really has no advantage over the Win Mag except maybe with some bullet weights under 180 grain and its got a bigger kick (in my opinion).

Love mine!! Its a savage model 10 sierra with a 20" bbl. I put a limbsaver recoil pad on it and I can shoot it all day. Its the most accurate gun I own out to 400 yards. Likes 165 grain pills!!

I have had several, including a Tikka T3. All have been superbly accurate, and the recoil in the T3 was more than manageable when I dropped it into a Bell & Carlson aftermarket stock. Great cartridge IMO. Splitting hairs between it and the 300WM.

I’ve had about 4 of them. Extremely accurate with the right recipe. They perform best , as do most magnums, at close to the highest threshold of pressure. My most current is an older HS Prescion, light is nice, it’s crazy accurate, but that comes with a price. I do love this platform and cartridge combination!

Owned one early on in the WSM craze.
Mine did as advertised from a 24” barrel(3115fps w/165’s) 3/4-7/8 MOA.
Gave me some fits resizing cases, but a bit of time listening and learning on the old shortmags forum had it all sorted out in due course.

I have a tikka t3x in 300wsm.
Taken antelope to elk with it. Love it.

One bad part...

Finding ammo and the price.
If you reload it's fairly cheap.
I think my eldx reloads are about $0.60 - $0.70 each. To buy a box it's close to $75 a box for that.

I've got a tikka superlite in 300wsm and I like it.
Taken everything with it and it kills.

I have had one in a Browning A-Bolt II for many years and love it.

Good cartridge , ballistics as similar to other 30 cal. . Mine is very accurate as it has a Shilen barrel on it . If one owns one great if one owns a different 30 mag they are not missing anything. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder .

I have one in the browning TI that weighs 5.5 pounds. I pretty much have run only reloads through it. For the most part 180 & 200 grain bullets. The recoil doesn't bother me but I use a lead sled for sighting in. I keep trying to figure out what would be better but can't. The one negative is hard on brass. I seem to acquire lose primer pockets easily & am not at max. As well I was getting some split necks until I started annealing. If shooting only factory loads those negatives don't matter. 180 grain at about 2950 fps. Kind of between the 30-06 & 300 win mag. I can and have pushed it harder but am comfortable where it is at. Really splitting hairs between the three but I like short & light.

I built a 300WSM on a short action 950T with a 30" McPhee barrel years ago for long range shooting from 1,000 to 1 mile.
it was fantastic, but it was throated for a particular, custom made 220 grain bullet, and was a special purpose rifle, not a hunting rifle.:)
As far as comparing it to a 300mag or H&H, I tend to shoot single shots so action length would be a mute point, so I would probablly go with a 300Win Mag if I were to do another.

I had one Tikka T3 in 300WSM. Unpleasant to shoot as it was kicking like a mule. Easy to develop a load, but very hard on brass. In many reloads I got split necks and loose primer pockets after the first reload. I sold it as I did not see any real advantage compared to 30-06.

That's what it was, a marketing ploy, better be a dedicated hand loader to own one these days. No real advantage over standard calibers and one less magazine capacity in most guns.

I’ve shot mine a lot. 165 grain Barnes has accounted for a B+C ram, a 62 inch moose, several wolves and a near record book elk. Also some nice whitetails.
I have a brake on mine so recoil is on par with a 270.

If you haven't purchased yet you should reconsider.
Getting near impossible to find brass ( at least I havent had any luck ) I havent looked too hard but the last several stores I've been to haven't had any factory loads either.
Other than that I like mine. I don't find the recoil too bad ( sako 85 finnlight )

I picked one up in a Model 70. I dont reload so it doesn't matter to me what it does to brass or availability of brass. I found 5 boxes of ammo for it in the 180 gr accubonds so ill give them a try and see how it does. If I dont like it, it will go down the road and ill be back to my 270 Win or maybe trade it for something like a 25-06 or 6.5 Creed

I had one in a browning white gold medallion beautiful rifle but brutal recoil. It also wouldn’t cycle some factor ammo some the two boxes I bought for it I could only close the bolt on 25-30% of them. Accurate gun just not a caliber for me.

Owned a Sako 75 finnlight in that cartridge. Shot a grizzly with a 180 accubond bullet.
Loved it but it moved on as so many others have...

I really like my Tikka T3 in 300 WSM. It shoots 180 GR Barnes really well, and it shoots 208 Amax so accurately it is silly. 3 to 4 inch groups at 600 yards with 208 Amax handloads the few times I've stretched it out on targets. Limbsaver pad helps a ton. I also use a brake and ear-muffs when I'm long range/target shooting and the brake tames the recoil to a manageable level. I don't use the brake when hunting, but I never feel recoil when I'm shooting at game :-) There are other softer-shooting rifles that I love to shoot -- but when I want to plant a whitetail or elk, this has been my best cartridge.

I have been considering a Finnlight in 300wsm, with a light scope it could make a good bush gun because of the shorter barrel but also go the distance when needed. But it’s hard to decide whether or not I should just go with a 30.06, for simplicity. I hunt on my own quite a bit and in bear country, so figured it would have more energy if needed. Otherwise the 25.06 is has been incredible out to 400 on WT.

Have one in Tikka t3. Been killing big game with it. and I'm able to hunt big game in long shots with the cartridge (200 yrd+)

Bad parts about the cartridge is when doing sighting/load development on it. I need to wear a shoulder pad when shooting on the bench. On the field, the recoil is negligible due to the amount of clothing/padding wore for warmth; though it will do quite a muzzle flip. Giving no second chance for another shot.

Don't think any high quality brass makers like lapua...adg Atlas are making it yet. Only nosler and norma. Guessing it is only a matter of time.
