What caliber....and why?

For conversation sake... no sports, gatherings etc....BOREDOM!
I'm curious to other people's answers.
So here's my question.
If you could have only one cartridge. For hunting, plinking or bench rest fun etc...What would that caliber be? And why?

I'll start. Mine would be 338 win mag. My primary reason I prefer this caliber is to hunt elk and moose in big bear country. Other calibers do just fine. 338 win mag is just my preference because it's never let me down performance wise.

I’d say a .308, can kill anything in North America, cheap to reload, cheap surplus, ammo is everywhere. Many great platforms are in .308 and you can even stretch its legs out to 1000 plus if you want.

elkhunter11 03-31-2020 05:43 PM

I could so all of my big game hunting and target shooting with .284" bullets.

Twisted Canuck 03-31-2020 05:51 PM

7mm Remington Mag, or the 7mm-08. Because they work and I like 7s. Vanilla icecream is good too.

I realize those are cartridges, not calibre....but saying .284 didn't really say it.

catnthehat 03-31-2020 06:02 PM

Tough choice,.303 British or a 6.5/303 just because .:sHa_shakeshout:
Cat

I own a few,but have shot most of my game with my Mod 70 in .270, 150 grain Nosler partition. Its the first caliber I hunted with, and given the choice of only one would be my last.

Scottmisfits 03-31-2020 06:24 PM

I'm a 308/30-06 fan. Again, not caliber but cartridge.
My last couple, just to try them out have been 6.5CM, and 7mm Rem Mag. We'll see if one of them can sway me away from the 308.

Same thing I have been using. Works well and I cant complain about how its performed.

Dick284 03-31-2020 06:37 PM

.284”

EZM 03-31-2020 06:40 PM

can't go wrong with either the .284 (7mm) or the .30 cal as there are a number of cartridges that are easy to shoot without too much punishment ( 7mm-08 or 308) and other cartridges in either family with a little more punch (7mm mag, 300 mag).

If it was one cartridge ..... My choice would have to be a 280 AI - just because I don't have one.

leo 03-31-2020 06:40 PM

Tough choice but I’m going to give my vote to Caliber 284. Specifically 280 Remington.

heybert 03-31-2020 06:44 PM

Another fan of the 7mm/.284. My choice within is the 7mm RM.

guywiththemule 03-31-2020 06:52 PM

7 mm Rem mag .

trigger7mm 03-31-2020 06:54 PM

What caliber

7mm Rem mag. Been shooting the same one for 40 years, and it has never let me down. Taken a ton of game with it.

Echo-Gecko 03-31-2020 07:15 PM

7x57 it’s all I shoot anyway.

pikergolf 03-31-2020 07:20 PM

.223Rem, other than birds all I hunt is coyotes and I enjoy target shooting. Cheap to load for and easy to shoot.

icehunter 03-31-2020 07:27 PM

.338....namely the 340WBY.

bsmitty27 03-31-2020 07:28 PM

Any euro 6.5 or 7mm.
Well maybe the 7x64 I dont have one of those and kind of want to scratch that itch!

mrcrossbow 03-31-2020 07:29 PM

Only one..
. 22 good for plinking, good for small game hunting, will work for self defense if it ever came down to it. Ammo takes up very little room, can throw 1000 rounds in pack easy, cheap. Good for trading iv found.
Second pick would be my 12 gauge. Easy to reload. Can be used for basically anything. Depending on what you load it with. Keep a short lane adapter ( black powder down barrel thing) for 209 primers and can load that ol single shot up easy with about anything. And my 12g is my primary hunting arm be it rabbits to elk and any thing inbetween. If I had a. 22 adapter there would be zero question as to what I'd grap and keep no matter what.
Do like my 45-70 but if I had to pick one and only one the. 22 be my first pick. 12 gauge if I had that adapter.

Tronneroi 03-31-2020 07:44 PM

I'd have to say 30-06 even though my .308 has replaced it as my go-to .30 cal.

Smokinyotes 03-31-2020 07:57 PM

For big game, small game and targets I would have to say a 6.5-284.

Sashi 03-31-2020 08:05 PM

270 win

Same.... using a variety of Booolits. Although love my B78 in .243 too...
1) accurate
2) low/moderate recoil
3) readily available store ammo
4) easy to reload
5) plentiful bullet selection for anything in Canada
6) calibre has stood the test of time and will continue for a while

MountainTi 03-31-2020 08:09 PM

.30 cal 180 grain partition wrapped in a .300wby brass

Dubious 03-31-2020 08:23 PM

404 Jeffery

Its good for everything and sometimes it’s nice to not have to gut then. or grind them.

you get the idea.

OL_JR 03-31-2020 08:26 PM

7mm rem mag. Flat shootin, tolerable recoil and aint going anywhere anytime soon. With the right bullet no reason to feel under gunned for anything in this country anyways.

fordtruckin 03-31-2020 08:28 PM

Cartridge or caliber I’d probably choose the .308 as I just got one and I’m tired of buying and selling. I also have a suppressor to run with it which is amazing!

Ranger CS 03-31-2020 08:41 PM

Caliber is one thing, the speed of delivery is another!

270person 03-31-2020 08:48 PM

35 Whelen. 06 brass with 338 smack.

Mountainaccent 03-31-2020 08:49 PM

300 wsm and 7mm rem mag have become my favourites. Used to be 30-06 and 2506
