Bench Rest
 

What rest do you like for shooting off the bench and why. I am looking for a new one, sure wish I would have been in town when BPS have the lead-sled for half price!

It may be low budget, but I use a sack full of grain, on the roof of an old Dodge Colt. It is just the right height, and I can store things inside the car.:lol:

Now there's a touchy question...for me.. A number of years ago I decided that I should build a rest along the lines of a Wichita or similar......out of Stainless Steel. Well...we built a total of 5. 5 being the number of talented folks that co-opted this endeavor. We had the stainless supply guy (me), the machinist, the welder, and a cpl of guys that just jumped in on the project. We had the legs laser cut from plate, the centre pc machined from stainless bar, as were the feet which were cplg nuts and bolts for adjustment. Stainless bar was pressed into the brass bushing (only non-stainless on the thing). Stainess threaded bar and a plate (rest) welded to the top of the bar.

After they were all put together, I had the legs over-welded and then I dressed them to a nice contour with a die-grindef and polished.

When it was all said and done we had very nice rests that took a ton of work and we could've bought in crbon steel for a cpl of hundred bucks. I've used it for years now and it never fails to attract attention, but would I do it again. Nupe...I'd buy a good commercially available rest and be happy.

Anyway...I use and prefer a front fully adjustable tripod rest with a rear bag. I'm not a fan of a vice-type rest. If you know anybody that wants to buy one in Stainless Steel, it's for sale. I figure it's worth about 10,000.00 bucks time and materials included. lol.....

X2, I've had mine for probably around 15yrs, and works well. I had to replace the threaded elevation adjuster as it wore out, it definately helps to take the weight of the rifle off before turning up or down. Machined the new piece out or solid rod, so it should last alot longer than the original threaded pipe.
