Looking for the ultimate hunting knife
 

I have several knives but still looking for that ultimate hunting knife so I can retire everything else.

I like fixed blades
Blade around 4" long
Solid wood handle
Must be handsome
Must hold an edge for a long time

I know that Carbon steel holds a sharp edge longer but have also heard good things about powder coated steel.

Marttini Carbon steel blade knives is what I have been eyeing but would like to hear others opinions.

Would like to have Gene Ingram hunting knife, but can’t justify the cost since I have a hunting knife I love already...

That is a very handsome piece.

Similar setup for 1/3 the price... depends what you are looking for. Not a camo sheath and smooth micarta instead of a dremelled micarta handle, but very sturdy blade.

They also have a Rat 5 for shorter blade.

It's a bit longer than 4" but for an all purpose hunting knife look at a Ka-Bar. I've had mive for 15 years now and still going strong.

I like my Buck Gen 5 with cocobolo handle best. Great skinner and all around although I wouldn't do any heavy chopping with it.

Definitely not a skinning knife, but does a great job at removing heads from deer up to moose, or chopping down 3" trees among many other bush crafty needs. Mine goes with me everywhere.

When I pack a Kabar, I eat things that would make a billy goat puke. :) I do like my Buck 120 for all around too. Can you tell I'm a Buck fan?

Benchmade Saddle Mountain Skinner has a blade a little longer than 4" and a handle that isn't as close as you can get to wood without actually being wood, more durable than wood with a better grip than wood but looks exactly like wood. S30V steel, comes with a leather sheath with a micarta insert and a price point under $200.

I have a few knives and always want a smooth edge handle, most have a fixed 4-5" blade with a drop point. . I do have a clip point knife (folding) as well and like it for breasting geese/ducks, it has a rubber handle. I have mostly mid steel, reasonably easy to sharpen but edge does not last as long as high carbon. Started sharpening the knives with a work sharp, sharpener works really well.

Harharhar you can have all the fancy knife you can have. The first question is do you how to use it. Well its just a knife :). Honestly its more on how you do on what you have.

I do know how to use a knife for butchering caping and fleshing, and no I don't need an expensive knife but then I don't need an expensive rifles and shotguns either.
Doesn't mean I would disrespect or not worry about losing a cheap knife

My Russell Canadian has been with me since 68'. Dressed more Deer than I can remember, Elk Moose countless rabbits, upland birds and Salmon. Made a great camp knife through the years, with me always in the bush. It fits well in the hand and is a great skinner.

Many of the Knives I see carried are often large military style and actually not great for dressing, handier for chopping wood. Function should be ahead of form. I've helped numerous young hunters dress when they had the wrong tools.

You can get them in 01 or stainless G10 steels, workwearcanada.com carries them in micarta handles, curly birch or pick up a blank and make your own handle.

While back I bought a Fallkniven F6 blank and custom fitted it with a forest green micarta handle as a gift for my good hunting buddy. It's his favourite knife.

I’ve got a bench made it’s unbelievable sharp but I’ve got big hands and it doesn’t fit all that good nice knife though. I pack it and a cutco knife much like the picture rubber doesn’t slip fights perfect very sharp and I don’t loose it when I put it down. I may have lost a few along the way lol. I only ever use drop points for hunting purposes.

It is all about the quality of the steel and comfort.

The guys here on AO have really cooperated in sharing.

If you search "knives" or "knife steel", there is a ton of information here.

As for pricing, any good steel is expensive but worth every penny. You want edge retention then you pay up front.

On a sandy river shore running out of daylight & bull moose to gut, skin, quarter & hang back in camp is the place the guys owning cheap blades (usually) realize the value of owning quality knife steel.

I have an Old timer, by uncle Henery. You know the one. It was sold at Canadian tire in the 80’s, has the useless touch up stone in its little keeper on the sheeth. Anyway I have had it on my hip for 30 years. It has some how taken a slight curve that perfectly lines up with my hip, its weird, maybe too many naps, or a couple slip and falls while hunting? It has a super hard blade that is difficult to sharpen but is wicked sharp when done right. I love it. My wife just got me a Benchmade bushcraft knive for my birthday. S30v steel, pretty, nice and sharp and by all accounts my last knife. That will be my new knife from now on. I thought i was ready to let go of my old timer untill I realized i had dropped it on one last hunt. When I got home and realized what had happened I went into full blown panic mode. It was really quite pathetic as it was just a knife, 20-30 bucks maybe. Well i drove the hour and a bit to where I parked and there it was in the snow. Picked it up and instantly all was right again. I’ll have my new knife on my hip this year and retire my old knife to my gun cabinet-maybe. Uugh, decisions. Stupid knife.
