Here comes the cold

When the cold gets low enough in Florida it kills manatees and snook.

The northern Polar Vortex is headin south

Trochu 01-28-2019 03:10 PM

For us, the coldest daytime high on the 14 day forecast is -13C. Seems pretty balmy to me.

cold snaps are normal. I remember one of the big news headlines 30 years ago or more was an increase in citrus fruit prices because of a severe cold snap in Florida. go scare someone else.

Actually Sundance, No, the cold does not kill the Manatee & Snook, it forces them into the "Springs" in the brackish water areas, such as Crystal River.

I lived in Gainesville for 2 years, and all around the Florida Coast are "springs" that are a steady 72 F. On top of that there are a number of Power Stations along the Coast that also discharge warm water, which brings in the Manatee and Snook.

If you want to do something really worth while on a Florida Winter Vacation, look up swimming with the Manatee, and go do it. These animals are amazingly friendly, and the experience is 100 times better than going to Disney. Bring a waterproof camera and enjoy!

Now for the Gators in Georgia and north, and the oranges, this may be a problem. Of course for all the Pythons and Boa Constrictors in the Glades, cold really kills them off.

Interesting thing, without enough "chill hours" peaches will not grow in North Florida.

Expecting -52 with the wind chill tonight here in Winnipeg. Not much better the next couple days either.

Feb is usually brutal cold, as is most of March.

I guess Australia is the opposite 40° Celsius for 6 days straight, I'd much rather deal with the cold than the bloody heat.

Cold doesn’t kill snook? http://www.suncoastnews.com/sports/c...fbeafa515.html

And manatee?

https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl...205-story.html

Didn’t know about the peach thing.

It's not that bad... the weather reports are made to sound
so severe and dramatic.

Was out all day in the minus forty something otter trapping.

Needed a fire to thaw the bannock, that's all.

lead chucker 01-28-2019 10:12 PM

I'm a fair weather cowboy, I'll take it.

Drewski Canuck 01-28-2019 10:34 PM

Sundance,

Obviously some Manatee and Snook were not in proximity of the coastal springs. Many will be though.

You really have to see the area around Crystal River. Hundreds of Manatee concentrated in the lagoons and canals in the area of the springs. It only happens when it is cold, but this is how they have survived for centuries.

Most of Florida sits on limestone, with amazing caves that are flooded, and flowing to the coastal areas. You can put on a snorkel and mask and watch the water bubble up in the sand bottom, and it comes through this "karst" geomorphology.

You can feel easily 10 degrees difference close and far from the springs when you swim in the water.

I think we are both agreeing that not all snook and manatee die. Just some.

I do hope to make it down to snorkel someday. Saw some manatees are Fort Lauterdale once. Fished beside them in Cuba. Lost a few snook there also. Still need to land one.

When the cold gets low enough in Florida it kills manatees and snook.

Back before 1990 and CNN's instant rise to power, fame and ratings from their coverage on the Gulf War, this used to be just called winter.

Nowadays, the media feels the need to invent catch phrases like "polar vortex" and such, just so they can stay one step ahead of the competition and get the highest ratings. I miss the days when news was reported, not created....

Well -31 this morning so not too far off from this Arctic front stuff.....throw in a little wind....:scared0015:

Sundance,

If you are interested in FLA fishing, think of going for KING FISH (King Mackerel) They grow to 50 pds, migrate on the Atlantic side in January, and are vicious predators. Limit has been stomped down to 2 but it is not unheard of to catch 25 in a day.

Think of a Barracuda with attitude.

Seen them on a few a few fishing shows. Very cool looking fish and lots of fun.

Also like to catch triple tail and cobia.

Back country tarpon and eel grass reds and trout.

So much to chase.

Got that right. That's why they love to use the confusing "Wind Chill" temperature, which is almost meaningless. Back in Winnipeg in the '80s, they gave the wind chill values in watts per square meter. We knew bare flesh freezes in less that a minute at around 1800 W/m^2, so you better be dressed for it when it got to 2000!

The temperature in degrees is what it is. Wind chill just refers to how fast it gets there. So -30C is still -30C with a wind no matter how hard it's blowing. That's why the "feels like" temperatures are so confusing. But they make for better headlines.

We have been escaping the cold so far in GP, my weather app says it is +3! But, it's going down to -21 tomorrow, and -33 for the weekend. But we avoided most of it so :sHa_shakeshout:
