Daylight saving time? Have your say online.

Albertans are being asked for their input on ending the twice yearly ritual of changing the clocks.

The head of the legislature's Standing Committee on Alberta's Economic Future says this could have an impact on the entire province.

"It is important for this committee to hear from as many people as possible about Bill 203," said Graham Sucha, MLA for Calgary-Shaw.

If passed, Bill 203 would repeal the Daylight Saving Time Act and replace it with Alberta Standard Time.

Alberta would then remain on Mountain Daylight Time year round.

It would take effect on Nov. 2, 2018.

Albertans can submit opinions online. The deadline for submissions is July 28.

In April, the NDP MLA behind the bill, Thomas Dang, said 82 per cent of nearly 26,000 respondents to a survey he conducted said they wanted to end daylight saving time.

Another useless bill proposed by a 20 year old Dipper who's only life experience was a being ping pong player.

Can they not leave well enough alone ? I like the time change.

And how much is this costing? You know.. to paid consultants (friends of a politician)

double gun 07-21-2017 08:28 PM

Eliminating the time change is the only thing the NDP may do that I agree with.

I agree get rid of the time change...absolutely useless

Sundancefisher 07-22-2017 09:27 AM

Hate it. Back when communication was only telephone it had some marginal value. Now there is none.

Unregistered user 07-22-2017 09:55 AM

I hope they get rid of it. It will be their legacy from the only time they'll ever be in power in AB.

Unregistered user 07-22-2017 10:00 AM

Just did the survey, they're sending the clock the wrong way. I'm agin it.

Agree with you for now on this topic.

Heard that 27 states have a bill on the table to eliminate the changing of the clocks. If we could get a mass agreement that everyone in North America eliminates DST then it would make perfect sense to follow along.

We're like Saskatchewan most of the year, no need to be like those combine jockeys all year round. DST doesn't effect curling and farming like it does the rest of us.:scared0018::scared0018:

How does it "affect" you?

aulrich 09-19-2017 04:22 PM

No the farmers in Saskatchewan did not want daylight savings time because the extra hour of sun would have burned the crops.

There was an up side with the removal, with a 9:30 sunrise in the winter it would have made making the morning bite an hour easier.

Yup, our work days should revolve around two things...sun rise and sun set...:scared0018:

Husty 09-20-2017 06:59 AM

Glad they didnt change it. A 2 hour time change between Alberta and BC would ruin winter fun times.

Joe Black 09-20-2017 11:36 AM

don't call it dead yet. even after an all party committee unanimously said "bad idea, stay with daylight savings" Nothead came on the news yesterday and said because the majority of albertans from her Survey say "change", the bill WILL be tabled, debated, and voted on.

the thing i cant understand is what lobby group is wanting her to do this? who benefits by changing? does anybody have nay ideas?

The Elkster 09-20-2017 12:24 PM

Time change isn't a big deal its just pointless and should be abolished like the old "No Sunday Hunting". Its just one of the things gov't should do and as far as I have heard they NDP aren't planning on this being their only priority. People can address more than on issue at a time *gasp* The majority is for getting rid of it and in a democracy I thinks its great they are still holding a vote. Certainly the majority of people I talk to want it gone and are fine with this getting some attention. There will be some minor adjustment one time then we can say goodbye to clock changing forever and more importantly have more light on winters evenings. if people aren't forced by darkness into watching a sub par hockey game then sobeit. Love it. Not going to be long before every jurisdiction follows suit. Yeeehaw

...would be better if it were done on a Canada wide initiative however. AB should invite other provinces to follow suit. Get the discussion rolling right across the country.

Joe Black 09-20-2017 12:58 PM

great idea. get all of north america on board and you'll be getting some where.

problem is with your suggestion is that instead of dealing with time changes going east to to west, you would now need to do it going north and south, as we follow the same daylight changes as the US.

there was a major reason why West Jet said they would pull their flight scheduling headquarters out of Alberta if this happens.

I agree they should have left well enough alone. We should go back to one time zone year round like it used to be.

LSLAKER 09-20-2017 01:58 PM

Referendum to Decide

I have my doubts if the majority of Albertans are in favour of getting rid of daylight saving time. One shouldn't believe to much of what politician do say. When cornered they all like to say "We have consulted with the people and this is what they want". This of course being one of their favourite lies to the people.

Only a referendum will determine what Albertans want. No better time is when the next provincial election is held. There will then be an honest majority one way or the other. In favour of DST will most likely be the result.

The 1971 referendum was 62% in favour on going with DST.

I think that the NDP now know that to make changes without a referendum would hurt them even further at the next election.
