I call them a trappers nightmare

Battle Rat 10-15-2014 08:25 PM

They are very nocturnal so they are seldom seen. I have them around but usually don't see them until well past dark. Many of my friend living near by have never seen them.

Flying squirrels

I've only encountered them twice, lived all my 44 years in Edmonton area. Once, when I was about twelve years old, I climbed up a tree in the NSR valley to look in a magpies nest and a squirrel jumped out and soared to the ground! I then pushed open the grass nest , which had been built inside the twig nest ,and there was about four young ones staring back at me! They where fairly large at this time and looked like an adult only smaller! Then last year, while driving in Lamont county at night, I saw another one soar down from the treetops and land on the road in front of my truck!! It sat there, in plain sight, as I tried to awaken my wife who was sleeping in the passenger seat, but of course, it ran off before she saw it. She still thinks that I was seeing things, haha!

They're here

See them at moose camp in 512. At night only in the moonlight or the faint glow from the lights in the wall tent shining up into the spruce.

Bigdad013 10-15-2014 09:05 PM

At a Buddy's cabin near Bergen, you could here them land on the roof all the time.

moose maniac 10-15-2014 09:09 PM

I catch quite a few every year

drake 10-15-2014 09:12 PM

What were you trapping with a 220 and spruce grouse parts at this time of year?

Marten1576 10-15-2014 09:32 PM

Caught one two years ago. Seen a couple late at night camping in the foot hills. Was also wondering what you re trapping this time of year with a 220 and spruce grouse for bait?

Flying bait stealers

I hate those little pests! They steal bait and ruin squirrels on me all season. I caught 6 last year, shame they aren't worth anything, kind of have nice fur. Tried to skin one last year, that front bone/foot thing makes it nearly impossible.

Our place isnt too far from there and we see them at night fairly often. You'll catch something out of the corner of your eye flying by. Have managed a few pics over the years. I almost hand fed this one.

Never knew we had them in this area but a few years ago my cats started catching quite a few in Sept and Oct.

thumper 10-17-2014 02:39 PM

If you find the entry holes to your bird-houses all chewed up, it's often caused by flying squirrels. We have them in Canmore as well.

I don't start shat with allot but if your trapping bever your using the wrong bait and a bad location and if your targeting skunks just use dog food they love the stuff. Don't post stuff like this on a trapping forum we all know what u are trying to catch. Just my thoughts dec first u can do the baited cubbie an the fur will be in thir prime then. Fish and fur look at this site too.
