Self defence during bow season

I know a lot of people take shotguns with them or coach guns when hunting in grizzly country during the rifle season but how is it when hunting during the bow season? I plan on taking a bear fire extinguisher but don't feel it's always going to work. Are you allowed to have a shotgun with you? I'm heading deep into the bush for elk and moose and I'm worried under stress I won't be able to shoot a bear with an arrow haha.

Lemme know please.

Maverick 88 pistol grip defender. The plug is removed. I don’t hunt birds so totally legal year round. Your best defender in bear country is to keep fully alert all day long. But in a rare case of bear attack I feel a firearm is more deterrent than pepper spray.

If you are going deep into the woods you will be wishing you didn’t bring that 5-7 extra lbs of firearm with you. I love my 12” pump shotgun but if I am hiking it usually gets to combersome and ends up strapped to my pack and that’s no help in a O SH*T momnent. Last season I tested out a drop leg platform with a mystery ranch can holder/universal pistol holder for my pellet gun/mag pouch for my camera. Yes I am only carrying a pellet gun a .45 would be nice but that’s never going to happen in a liberal government. So with that setup I have a can of spray and a bear banger / flare pen all on my leg so I can always have it with me. I am notorious for dropping my pack and going exploring, so the can of spray and bangers on the pack waist belt made no sense for me Back to the pellet gun, it’s a great way to quietly blast a grouse for supper while archery hunting.
You could switch out the pistol for a good fixed blade or a pouch anything really on the mollie system. It pretty light weight and it’s always with me.

You can’t see it but the pen launcher is right behind the can of spray and the three flares just go under the pepper can.

It's a mossberg 590.

And don't bother. I go deep into the Bush with just the bow and spray regularly. I see grizz frequently. I've yet to share my pants.

I don't know anyone that takes shotguns along with them riflen hunting just for bears. A rifles better for bears than a shotgun.

Stop fretting; there's no bears in Texas.

I have a Mossberg defender as well but I took off the pistol grip...tried the pistol grip (shooting holding gun chest high) at the range and couldn't hit anything past 20 yards (stationary at that), and then only in the paper, not bullseye.
With my bad knee I spend more time on stand with my bow than actual walking, so I carry my bow in on a sling and have my shotgun in my hands...I am definitely in grizz/cougar country.

I know it's hard to follow along where I am lol. I'm currently in krakow, that's why the post is in the middle of the night. But I'll be hunting Alberta near hinton.

There are black bears I believe in the pan handle from what people have said. I think Texas wildlife said they have seen them as well.
