Ice rod for cold lake lakers
 

Guys what brand,length and power of ice rod do you use to ice fish Lakers at Cold lake ?

Brand isn't as relevant (get good quality, tho...) but 40-45" MH is the right kinda rod for Lakers anywhere. You want some backbone and muscle to be able to get the fish up easily and not have to really play it out.

38" HT Laker Pro ice.
I have several and use them for all the larger species. They come in other lengths too 45" max I believe but tough to find locally. They have been great rods and I find they have have lots of backbone and still can see the bites unlike some other heavier rods. Many have been caught on them and no issues so far.

I got mine at WSS but since they are gone the only other supplier I think is TFH and only 38" IIRC. Amazon and Sail in Canada carry the longer ones I believe for online purchase.

I would go with what Weavster says. Lol.

I run the 38” heavy frabill ‘gussy’ ice hunter rods or the 40” Jason mitchell Mack rods at cabelas. The Jason Mitchell’s have 12” handles! They’re on the stuff side for the 2-4lb lakers at cold but they jig heavy tubes nicely and are great for the above average size fish. Did I mention 12” handles? Need to start a ‘make handles long again’ movement.

Used St. Croix's a lot. Can handle any fish, more important is your reel and a good drag.

this is a good point. When it comes to a good ice fishing Rod/Reel combo, your reel is far more important. Get a good Shimano reel on there with a solid drag.

42” Quantum Solid Ice Carbon MH. Pair with a 25 series Pflueger President XT and 20lb ice braid to a 6ft 15lb flouro leader. Haven’t found a better rod for the price point. Big, ice free eyelets, great action, handles bigger fish and their head shakes and dives no problem. Lots of power for turning those bigger fish skyward as well.

hmmm I just take half my 7' medium action rod and use my finger just past the bail to feel for sensitivity or one of my telescopic rods and only extend the last two sections....its laker fishing so you don't have to get all technical.

I run 36” medium heavy baitcaster with flippin switch. Normally in a tent and can just get it in a jawjacker as well.

These Jason Mitchell mackinaw rods are sweet quality for the price, comes in medium heavy 40" or heavy 45"

I run a 38 inch blue ice rod when targeting large lakers and a laker pro as my back up

Made my own, cut down a old muskie rod to 38", made a cork handle and attached a decent quality large capacity reel spooled up with dacron & floro leader.

I use St.Croix ice rods, a little longer than most of my other ice rods, but great for bigger fish like lakers.

I think they are 38" Med Heavy.

I love these rods because it has a true reel seat (and not silly slip on bands), and the rods are built tough - so when you step on them, impale your doorway on the way into the tent, or have that jaw jacker explode and the rod whips you in the face - they survive the unique abuse the ice season brings with my clumsiness and stupidity.

As with all St.Croix rods, they are very sensitive and that's great when the fish are being sneaky and nibbling.

I generally use a spinning reel from summer fishing for lakers that hold lots of line. In shallow water, going after pike, I use a frabill center pin reel.

Thanks for all the info and help guys. I ended up getting CLAM'S JASON MITCHELL ELITE MACK (Mackinaw Big Fish Series) 40"medium heavy spinning ice rod. I was impressed with the high grade solid graphite blank the rod was made from. Can't wait to hit Cold Lake for Lakers. Tight lines every one !!!!!
