Wolf gun.
We have had a big problem lately with wolves and coyotes lately. Thinking of getting a gun in the future for wolves and the odd coyote.
What do you guys recoomend for caliber? Was thinking maybe .243 or 260 |
22-250 otta work ..... 243 too
..... 25-06 for even more power |
Just schoot em!

Wolf gun ??
Any thing that works for deer and up, one less wolf is better for the game we hunt . Blast em when you can..!!
|
The little 243 is a nice calibre choice.

I've never had any trouble with my .270 tearing them up to badly. Probably a .243 or a 25-06 would be ideal.
Since there is often the opportunity for multiple kills I've often wondered if a semi-auto would be preferable to the more common bolt action. Wolf hunting often means miserable weather though, so maybe a pump? |
Another vote for 22-250 with 10x scope.:fighting0007::character0110:

I shoot coyotes with a 243
My wf uses a .204 and sometimes a .223. If you hit them all the dogs die.

Wolf gun
I’ve shot 3
All with a 223 Not enough jam.. knocks them down with the varmint grenades But they definitely aren’t dead |
I've got a Winchester 70 featherweight in 22-250 with a 4-16 Bushnell Elite 6500 on it...Perfect coyote gun, I expect it would do the trick on wolf as well. I also have an XCR in 5.56/223 that works great, a 6x on it...but it sure is heavy! Weighs twice what the Win does. Depends if you are seeing individuals or packs, which to carry. I don't think you'd need more than those. But, a 243 would be my next best choice.

A buddy of mine just killed one that weighed 170lb, he was pretty happy to have had his 30-06 in hand rather than a varmint rifle, and the hide looks fine. All mine were killed with my .270 and they were fine as well. |
243 or 6mm pretty much the same, would be a nice wolf gun.
|
Im In favour of the 25-06 for a Wolf gun. Though any gun will work I am more keen on Longer range Flat shooting rifles for wolves

I have shot quite a few and have only had to take follow up shots when shooting a 204 or using SX type bullets in a swift. Also a semi-auto would be a poor choice in my opinion. |
Just a personally theory - but Wolves/Coyotes will go down and stay down with any high velocity round that causes hydro-static shock moreso compared to deer IMO. I have no scientific theory - but it has been quite consistent for me over 30 years of hunting.
I've made better shots on deer that dropped, got up, and ran a few yard before coming down and staying down whereas it seems I've made some less than ideal shots with my 257 WBY that just dropped the dogs on the spot. Maybe dogs aren't as tough? I dunno. I am always amazed how much of that tissue turns into jelly after a round punches through a dog. |
257 Roberts

I use a 25-06 for up here in northern BC. There's quite a difference in size between a wolf and a coyote.
YMMV |

Knocked a nice buck over at 150 yards with the 30-06. Dropped like a rock. Was down for what seemed like a few minutes then up and gone. So just hit the wolves hard with a good calibre that you feel comfortable shooting. |
257 wby!
|
Shot one that was far to curious when I was setting up my tent this year, 300 wsm with a 180, dropped where it stood, size of a quarter coming out.
I think anything I’d use for deer I’d use for wolves. A trapper I know has weighed them in at over 150 pounds, a bit more gun might not be a bad idea. |
Oh and forgot to add
308 win ...... nuff said |
.243 with 85gr. speer bt sp.......
|
I know a fella that shot 27 last year with 40gr whitebox winchester ammo from a 22-250. This year he is using a 243 win
|
22-250 is a nice fast and flat trajectory round and wont tear them up if your wanting to save the hide.
|
I've killed Wolves with a 22 magnum and others with my 30-06, a 280, and other calibers.
Any rifle will do, if the shooter is up to it. That being said, if I were choosing a rifle just for wolves and Coyote I would choose either a 22 250 or a 25 06, for the flatter trajectory. Wolves can be hard to get close to sometimes. Say Bob, those wolves still hanging around that were there when I was root raking for you? |
