Edmonton Area hatch chart
Does anyone have a hatch chart for the edmonton area?
|
They do change depending on what river or lake. There are lots of charts out there if you Google the area you are fishing in. The charts do not accommodate for yearly weather changes like drought. Our hatch numbers have been down as insect numbers decline, some where major hatches are much smaller. I like to keep notes in my fishing diaries about hatches and the bugs I scoop streamside to record for future years. Watch the water and pick up a good book on insects for ID. Another great book if you are really into it is The Phenological Fly By Bob Scammell. It matches insect super-hatches of the West with the blooming of native streamside wildflowers, shrubs, and trees.

I gotta ask…why?
Stockies aren’t smart and neither are goldeye, pike or walleye. You can throw an elk hair caddis, Tom Thumb or olive wooly bugger every day there’s open water and catch everything that swims in the Edmonton region. Short answer is no, I’ve never seen a hatch chart for Edmonton |
Not really a hatch chart. One thing a person can do is when you drive to your fishing spot check your radiator front for insects. It may give a person an idea what kind of insects are out and when they appear.

Streamside spider webs can also hold great clues. Many times my fishing partner and I have had steller days on cagy Brown Trout streams by matching what is in the webs.
