257 roberts what is it good for?
 

My buddy was looking at a browning in this caliber yesterday, was wondering what good is this caliber other than a varmit rifle?

It would be a nice deer gun. It is also capable of killing an elk or moose, although it wouldn't be ideal for either.

Very good medium range deer/antelope cartridge.

I have shot Moose ,Elk ,Black, BEAR ,WT Deer, Mule Deer ,Antelope, Sheep,
coyotes, wolves, gophers, badgers, with mine .Dont ever under estemate what a 257 roberts can do its an awsome caliber it will continueously suprise the liveing kacka out of you

I would like to ask what was the distance of these kills with the 257 cal for the moose, elk,black bear .??

they were all around 200 and 250 yards one bear was 300 yards

I would not use one on a Grizzly, but it will knock down deer, sheep, pronghorn, moose and elk. Nice cartridge, low recoil, reasonably flat trajectories. Somewhat antiquated due to the present 30+magnum trend, but it is making a comeback.

I was out 2 seasons ago with my friends wife on a muley hunt in southern Alberta. She was shooting a Winchester feather in 257 Roberts, and downed a monster of a mule buck. She was shooting factory 117gr Hornady ammo. When we skinned out that animal I could believe the damage this bullet had created inside that animal. Bullet travelled from low in the front 1/4 through the whole body and out the other side past the ribs. Quite amazing I thought.

I'll have to lend her that gun again sometime when we are drawn for antelope perhaps. FS

Ruger still lists a 257 Roberts.On the higher end,Cooper does as well.

Kimber 84M can also be had in .257 Roberts

I had a 257 Roberts ai built on a Remington short action.It is going to be my deer rifle.I had the Ruger ultra light in 257 Roberts.very nice rifle.

Remington have brought out a CDL in 257 Roberts for 2009. Great looking rifle with stainless over walnut, FS

I've owned a Bob, it never did anything spectacular for me. I'd take the 25-06as a far superior quarter bore, but that's just me.

The .257 Roberts was and still is a great calibre. Many new calibres have replaced the good old stand by's of years gone by.
It's basically comparable to the newer .243 that replaced it. Their ballistics are essentially the same but the .243 is slightly flatter shooting with lighter bullets. Next up the ladder would be the fine 25-06.

A fantastic little cartridge. I am currently getting one built around a 1909 Argentine mauser action. Keep in mind that factory ammo far the "Bob" tends to be a little week. You must reload to get the most out of this round.
The 115-120 grain bullets pushed to 2800 fps make it a 400 yard gun for small deer and antelope. You would want to get a bit closer to them big prarie deer. The 115 grain solid copper offerings from Berger and Barnes would be my choice for moose and elk out to 250 yards. With the bigger game shot placement is more critical, get them broadside.
I'd like to take mine on a sheep hunt when it's ready to go, but it's gonna have an awfully nice piece of wood on it. Might take the 700 classic in 7x57 instead.
