Ruger Precision Rifle .243
 

Fellas, I have an opportunity for a great deal on a new RPR in 243. Sure 6.5 would be my caliber choice but I think the 6mm has potential too. Does anyone have any experience with this particular setup? Yes I know the rifle is great, I have done plenty of reading on the platform itself, but Ruger stopped producing the rifle in 243 and I’m just looking for a reason not to buy it I suppose. For $1200 I think this is a no brainer but would love your feedback

I like the 243 win but not to many factory rifles will give you a 1-8 twist in them to shoot the heavy bullets for long range.
Whats the twist rate on it and how far do you want to shoot it ?

My family range is only 750 yards but I’d like to reach out a bit farther. The twist rate is 1 in 7.75 or 7.5 can’t recall. Have some 108’s I would be trying out.

If the 243 isn't what you want, you can spin off the barrel and spin a prefit 6.5CM on for like $300. I changed my stock 6.5CM barrel out with an aftermarket one. It was quite easy to check and verify with go and no go gauge. I think it took me about 2 hours to do so.

With that twist rate I’d go heavier than 108 as well.

Thanks for all the responses, but I’ve had some time to thing now... wife approved a rare $1500 for a new gun so I’m looking at all the options I’ve wanted for a long time.

I’m at that turning point in a mans life where he finally begs and cleans his way to buying another gun he doesn’t need. I have a 243 so there’s the familiarity with the cartridge and components in my stock. But I would also really like to expand my caliber game to the 6.5’s of which I own none. Also don’t have a Remington or a Ruger center fire, and would like both. I do about 1500 rounds worth of shooting per year and will get use out of any new gun but it’ll be a couple years until I can earn another new purchase and I now can’t decide. Someone please pressure me in one direction or another.
For the money I’m still sure the 243 is probably the best way to go. Can always make it 260 or 6.5 creed, but then there’s the Beauty Remington’s. I suppose investment would be required to smooth out the function of the Remington’s, should I just pull the trigger (I had to) on the 243

You seem to really want to try a 6.5, already have a .243, and will not be getting a new rifle in a couple years... so I would get what I wanted and not be that worried about $300 or have to have the conversion with my wife about upgrading the new rifle!

I'll pressure you. If you don't have the luxury of buying new guns just because you feel like it, then why on earth would you get something your really don't want (243). No way in hell I get the 243 if I have my heart set on a 6.5. Further, when you want to try something different, that 243 will be harder to sell.

As for your choices, I had a 5R. That thing was crazy accurate. One of the ones I shouldn't have sold. If you like the style of the Ruger in 6.5 then get that. These are just grownup toys, so get the one that will make you smile the most. This stuff is actually pretty simple. May I suggest you add the Tikka CTR to your choices. They are consistently accurate and likely have a better trigger than the choices you have listed.

Thumbs up for a 6.5,its a great round and better balistics for long range.I really like my 6.5 creedmoor browning X-bolt target(28" barrel).I wouldn't pass up a good deal on a 260 or 6.5 x 47 or 6.5 x 55. Tikka's are very nice also.

Headed to cabelas tomorrow. If they have the 700 5r in stock I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ll get. But I’ll be looking at a few 6.5cm and 260 rifles. Thanks for all the input. Too bad their sale ended on the ruger precision. Back to $1800 now. The 243 is still at the other store. If I make the purchase I’ll disclose the great deal for whomever might want it.

It's sometimes hard to stay on track with the game plan, but choosing something that was not really in the mix is not a good idea over the long hual.

You show up at the range, and there is another fellow shooting the rifle and cartrage you wanted all along.

That is not a good feeling my friend. LOL.

If the unit you want is to much in funds, hold off till the deal shows up,,, some folks change firearms every year,,, this is where the good deals come from.

^I'm in the exact same boat with any new gun purchase. I thought I was the only one. lol :) In my case, my wife stays right out of my affairs/purchases 99% of the time. She trusts me, and I don't betray that trust.

Not saying that I haven't forgotten the odd new rifle/shotgun in the truck until well after she's asleep at night, but that's just forgetfulness on my part. :)

To the question~the RPR in .243 was a gun I very seriously considered, and ended-up buying a new Savage in that caliber. (model 10, predator) That gun is gone, and likely to be replaced by a new Mauser M18 in .243 in 2019 sometime. Were I in your situation (with that list of options) I'd likely pick the 5r in 6.5, if only to try a new flavor. I SURE wouldn't let the $300 sway your decision. (or the other $200-$300 in dies/brass/bullets~see truck-in-driveway comment above for direction on that) Seriously though, don't think about the $1,200 deal...think about what you want to see when you open the safe. It matters more.

I have a savage 10 predator in 223 and it’s my current favourite rifle. Tested out the various Remington’s last night and I’m 95% on the 5r. The magpul variant has 5r rifling also but the stock felt cheap. I didn’t care for the hs precision stock on the 5r though. And of course the most comfortable stock (hogue) is the worst choice of the 3. Might stop after work for the 6.5 5r!!

I would not lean towards 5R rifling in guiding my decision as I don’t think that either 5 groove or “r” style rifling have proven to be accuracy enhancements.
