Area Code 844

So, I just received a call on my cellphone from area code 844. I didn't answer the call but I googled it to see where it was from. It turns out that 844 is not from a geographical area and it is a long distance COLLECT call that the person receiving the call has to pay for. So what's the scam, getting you to answer and try to keep you talking to collect more money?

I got it too, Conservative Party survey.

Yeah, they left a voicemail for a short survey on who I was voting for. Interesting what I found on Google about area code 844 though.

It's just a different phone number for the same old scams.

area code 844

Area code 844 is an area code reserved for toll-free calls in which the calling party is not charged. Instead, the telephone carrier charges the cost of the call to the called party. It's a number commonly used primarily by telemarketers & other assorted scam artists.

Sounds like the google quote that I read! In that case the survey is likely a scam just to keep you on the phone so the scammers rack up the bucks. No wonder the first question asked, "If you'll vote for XX press #1", etc, for all of the candidates. It probably takes a minute to go through all the candidates = $$$! I suppose that you'd spend another minute listening to the second question......and so on. Fricken brilliant!

They called me a few days ago, it was the NDP Doing a survey on how well they are doing. I let them know.

I just concluded some legitimate business with Revenue Canada and theirs started 844.
I think its just another 800, 866, etc.

Deadeye2u 03-30-2017 07:42 AM

Area codes 800, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888
The area codes or prefixes 800, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 are used for toll free numbers in all the countries covered by the North American Numbering Plan. A toll free number is a telephone number people can call free of charge (the owner of the toll free number pays the calling charges).

Scam or con - same thing.

Remember all the outrage when the NDP hired out of province for gov't positions, Fort Mc fire repair etc.

I got a few calls from WRP asking for support. When I inquired where the caller was I got....Toronto, B.C. twice and last night, after several replies of " in an office" and no indication of where the office was they hung up.
A call to WRP netted the onof that all political parties likely use the same fund raising company..

Guess no one in alberta can use a phone.
