P14 Enfield
I just bought a P14 Enfield .303. It is on its way via Canada post.
Maybe I should have asked this before I bought it… For those of you who have shot one, what do you think about the rifle? Good shooter for hunting? ect. Sporterized with original sights worth the 350? |
Enfield.....
I have a P-17 Enfield that was sporterized by BSA. Now, its chambered in 30-06 but I let a gunsmith look at the rifle a while ago. He mentioned that the guns still shoot nice these days but may not be as acurate as todays rifles with todays technology(understandable). Plus the weight of them is certainly evident when shooting but not unbearable.
The Bolt actions are really strong and they last a lifetime of hunting. Mine shoots nice for a rifle that originally was made for WW1! cant complain. Check out the barrell on it, give it a good cleaning and happy hunting. In my opinion, you did well. Plus, you line up a .303 in the boiler room of most of our game, it's meat on your table. No doubt. Cheers, Dudes2010 |
If it's just a Bubba conversion, you paid too much. :D Going price is about 200. If it's got a new stock and the mag has been altered, not so bad. I'f the metal hasn't been butchered, always the option of converting it back to mil spec, but that will be expensive as well. Definitely rated as the strongest military rifle action out there and used to be a common choice for magnum conversion.

no complaints on mine. Serial numbers and everything match up to WW2 and it's been sporterized.
looking for non-sporterized one now LoL |
I bought a BSA P14 last spring and with the load it likes best, it might be the most accurate hunting rifle I have in the house. Makes me think I've wasted a lot of time and money over the years! I kind of like the darn things. There is no question they are a rugged, dependable, rifle which will stand up to rough use. Leeper

I have a P-14 in 7mm. Its a POS. Can't get that thing to hit anything past 50 yards. I would check the barrel for wear when you get it.

That wouldn't be the one's butchered by Century Arms would it per chance?they also did some in .300 win mag.......Harold

I got it ! It is a Remington.
The rifling is super sharp, looks like a new barrel inside. Who ever sporterized the stock put varnish all over the barrel and action. Will acetone take it off without ruining the blueing? It still has the original cleaning rope in the stock, pretty much the first bore snake. Action is tight and man does it shoot. pretty cool gun for being almost 100. |

I just picked up a Winchester P14 in original Condition, so I'm just going to sell this one (the sporter) or trade it if anyone is interested?
Here is a pic of both. Pretty excited about this buy. Love shooting these guys. |

Attachment 75723 Attachment 75724 Attachment 75725 I was wondering what a Winchester P14 that has been sporterized is worth . I have one that the metal work is in very good condition , the dog ears are gone and a rear sight has been in stalled . The stock is a cut down version but has the original metal butt plate and round side medallion in the stock . Any thoughts would be would be most welcome. |

I don't know about current values but I do know the rifle, I used to own one.
I liked it even though it cranked like a model T. I think they have the greatest bolt rotation of any gun I have ever seen. But most were well built and strong as anything made. A lot of P14s and P17s have been converted to big bore or wildcat cartridges. As I said, I liked mine, it shot well and was as reliable a Estwing Hammer. But it was heavy and awkward looking, IMO. |

Hello
This one's action is slick and fast , looks like at some point the action was polished and tuned . It's very accurate , shoot clay pigeons at two yards from the bench . It's just taking up to much room and I don't shoot 303 any more , have not shot it since surplus ammo dried up . Thanks you for your thoughts |
They are a tad on the heavy side compared to modern rifles, but accurate and as dependable as a rock!:)
I have one that was customized wit a Bishop stock , and a Douglas barrel in 280. Cat |
Thanks for selling me your other P14, Cat.
Remember that one. It shoots not to bad either. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...marifle001.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...hockey2008.jpg |

When I started hunting a very long time ago I bought a .303 with a 4x weaver scope because I was not sure how much hunting I would be doing and did not want to spend a lot of money. It is still the only hunting rife I have and have never felt the need to get another one. I have taken down everything from moose to deer with it, its a great gun and has never let me down.

Bought mine second hand from a member here. Properly sporterized and well taken care of -- I got it for $250. Shoots very well, feels tough and dependable. The sights take some getting used to, but I'm certain it'll get me a deer this year. Only complaint I have about mine is that it doesn't chamber anything but Hornady rounds. Winchester cartridges are just too rough, it seems, for the magazine opening.

That's a P14! WOW! That's pretty enough to get married to! |
Bought one of those sporterized with a scope when I was 16 for $175.00. Most frustrating gun I ever had or used. Throat must have been done. For years I thought I was a terrible shot. The best 3 shot group (handloads) I could get out of it was 1.75 inches. Couldn't do better than 6" with any factory ammo.
Come to think of it I left that gun with an amateur gunsmith to look at scope mounts and I never even picked it up. Dang Its been a few years now and I would like to have re-barreled it one day.:angry3: |
Ive got two now, had one before in 300 weatherby with a beauty of a stock, it was sent out for engraving by the previous owner but never shot that well so I sold it.
I picked up a nice sporter (minus the furniture) in .303, the other year for $100, and have a hand me down from my grandfather in .311-.308 norma. Id eventually like to get the one restocked and both rebarrelled or rechambered, but thats time and money. The wifes spoken for both of those for the time being. Western gun in edmonton has some decent commercial barrels for them for cheap and in good condition apparently, though not in the chamberings Im looking for. |
I should correct my comment, western guns doesn't have any barrels when i talked to them.
I'm still debating a rechamber, but it sounds like to take it to 300 win may require more work then just a reamer. Also curious if anyone has done anything interesting with the P-14, it sounds like they prefer belted ammunition as per their bolt face, and the reciever is built for shorter ammunition. 375 win or 45-70 would be cool but that would require a new barrel, and 375 H&H may require opening things up for a longer round. I hate to see these sit in the safe, but its also cost prohibitive to change them. |
Never mind the barrel or stock. P14's and P17's are good actions to build on.
