My First Sturgeon!

Hello!

It's been awhile since I went fishing, and I got a bonus from the River!

I caught my first Sturgeon!!! That was a wicked fight! More than 20 min, that fish is a pure muscle! 49 inches long, and around 35-40 pounds according to the Length/weight/age chart I found.
That was a pure blast!!!

My biggest catch so far!

That as a very emotional day for me, and I wanna share with you guys video I made landing my first River Monster!

Awesome man! I started targeting sturgeon 2 years back. I’m hooked. There’s nothing else like it in Alberta for feeling raw power. Especially when they leave the Eddie and hit the mainstream current. I don’t even like lake fishing anymore. River fishing is where it’s at.

That’s a great catch. Good for you. Those fish can really pull hard. Hope ya catch a bigger one next time.

Was just talking with another fisherman last week about fishing the NSR... And I thought, "man, catching a sturgeon would be a real treat!"

Congrats on your river monster!

Angler 05-28-2019 06:33 PM

Thanks guys!
I hope catching the second one, not gonna take as long as first one! Lol

Nothing is better than your first sturgeon. The more I fish for sturgeon the less I want to fish for walleye

Ain’t that the truth!

I made the mistake of fishing the Fraser for white sturgeon, now even salmon and halibut fishing have lost their appeal, aside from the meals they provide.

Awesome!

At least salmon fight like a freight train. Only other fish that fights decent on the old man is budget tarpon on light gear

The sole reason I fish rivers for walleye is simply to catch a trophy and to be able to bring a few fish home (I keep a slot size between 20 and 24in). It seems that only the trophies put up any kind of fight. A 5lb redhorse puts up a better fight than nearly any walleye I've ever caught.

Have you ever fished for smallmouth bass? Terrific fighters.

Nope haven't fished for bass yet. Heading to Ontario in August, I might fish for bass then. Trophy walleye are pretty easy to catch in the River in September/October

That's a fact.

Caught my first one around 7pm one evening and I was still vibrating going to bed at midnight, what a rush!

Went to my secret Stergeon spot tonight, looks like it's not so secret anymore :(

I might see one other person at my spot in years past, tonight there were three groups of people plus a boat at my honey hole. Guess nothing good lasts forever..
